Executive Director Updates: A Month of Joyous Beginnings

I'm happy to report that we've started strong this year. We’re planting hundreds of trees for our residents. In partnership with families, we're beautifying neighborhoods and communities. Through our maternal and child health diaper program, we’re connecting with families across the DMV, helping them make sure that our area's babies are healthy and thriving in clean diapers. In the future, we:

  • Hope you take the time to celebrate your interest in trees with us. Watch out for the next tree planting demonstration in your area this year. At these demos, you can collect important information and items about planting and caring for your trees;
  • Will plant 180 trees this winter and spring; and
  • Hope you can continue to support us with your tax-deductible donations by clicking here: https://tinyurl.com/ghephope
Celebrating Trees and Families with the Family Tree Adoption Program of PG County
The Family Tree Adoption Program (FTAP) is gearing up to give even more trees new homes. In fact, we have 10+ new easy care and native tree varieties. Just as important, trees can contribute to many new, wonderful things:
  • Tree canopy lowers temperatures in the surrounding air by absorbing sunlight that would otherwise heat up the surrounding environment.
  • Trees lighten the mood. Nature exposure is scientifically proven to benefit mental health.
  • Stormwater filtration and reduction can occur through trees’ natural need for water.
 Please join us in the tree adoption process now; consider becoming a tree adopter or a donor today.

Our Diaper Program is Helping our Babies and their Moms Thrive

Do you know that many parents in America and in our DMV area go without fresh diapers for their children on a regular basis? It’s difficult to know what to make of this in a society like the United States, where resources to take care of children should be plentiful. But there is hope in the face of this injustice.

  • Our diaper program boasts of serving Moms from Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia) and thousands of participants a year.
  • We support our marginalized, refugees, and those with fixed and limited incomes.
  • We do not require proof of income or proof of residency to qualify. Anyone who seeks and needs free diapers may apply!

If you know of someone in need of diapers or are in need of diapers for yourself, please contact us via this application form today: https://tinyurl.com/ghepbaby

New Technology to Diagnose Sickle Cell: In the United States, we take many diagnostic tools and general healthcare opportunities for granted. What happens in areas where good healthcare is more scarce? In the central African country of Gabon, scarcity is often the case–especially in the case of sickle cell disease. But fortunately, research is in development to implement an important new technology called Sickle SCAN that may save many lives. Read on here, featured in our journal International Journal of Translational Medical Research and Public Health.
Digital World and Digital Health: The birth of the digital world has created great upheavals. What does that mean for your health? It means more tools to help you and your care providers identify existing problems or eliminate the possibility of emerging ones. It’s not science fiction–but instead real, life-saving technology! Delve into the International Journal of Maternal and Child Health and AIDS to learn more.
