Sunday Morning Worship Service

Dear Church Family,

Many of you have noticed the past several weeks that we have been tweaking our worship service. This is actually a continual process. Some adaptations have been more subtle than others. We wanted to inform you of what we are working to accomplish.

To continue to grow in excellence and order (1 Corinthians 14:40), we are working to arrange elements of our corporate service in such a way that will help us to have the biggest impact both for building up the body and for contextualizing the Gospel. Order is related to design and purpose as we see that God also arranged and ordered things even in creation (Gen. 1).

Here are some things we are looking to refine in the coming services:

1) Playing music up to the point of announcements – It would be good to play a playlist. I will be working to recruit and integrate instrumentalists (piano/ guitar/ etc.) to play up to the point of the countdown timer being zero. Regardless, music is important…

2) Stopping music when the announcements should begin -  The music ending can be just as important as beginning the music. That signifies a pause and helps draw people into the announcements. We can pair this with dimming the lights when the announcements start but keeping the side lights on (new bulbs coming soon) throughout worship service. Dimming the lights will provide a visual cue for the next portion of service.

3) More light stuff - When the countdown timer begins for the greet time, the house lights will be turned back on. Then during the Scripture reading, the lights can be turned back down as this will cue people to pay attention to the reading of Scripture.

Thanks for your eagerness to maintain unity! (Eph. 4:3)

That’s all for now!

Choir Ministry

Dear church and church choir,

I along with our church leaders have prayerfully been trying to discern the next steps for the church choir at First EFC. Thank you for your patience during this time in between. The choir did such an amazing job during the Christmas season and has been faithful to serve with their gifts. Let’s keep growing together!

In order to help support the aim of our church and in order to help best leverage our gifts and abilities for local mission outreach, we want to expand our current choir ministry. What that means is that rather than working toward singing special songs in the church service, we will look toward having a concert weekend in which we can invite the community of Las Cruces to attend.

Additionally, we will urge and desire from those who plan to participate in the choir to invite someone to come and sing with them, especially those who are unchurched, “de-churched” or uncertain in their faith. This will help us to both edify our body and to maintain an external focus. We are hopeful that this will help grow and strengthen the choral ministry within our body, as well as grow a Gospel presence in our community and foster a place for people to belong and serve within our church body. Our choral ministry will provide the opportunity for dynamic discipleship and evangelism through both weekly preparation and the concert presentations.

Can you imagine God redeeming people’s lives in our community through our choir ministry so that they are able to use their God given talents and passions to serve Christ? This is our heartbeat! The date will be planned around Easter time and we will be singing various themes of music with the intent  to highlight and extrapolate on those of a sacred nature in order to naturally share the Gospel.

In the fall we hope to add an auditioned youth choir as well, that would closely follow the model of what we do with the adult choir this spring!

We look forward to all that God will do and we ask that you join us in praying for the choir ministry here at our church.

What's In A Name?
In act 2, scene 2, of Romeo & Juliet, Juliet laments over the fact that she is forbidden to fall in love with Romeo because he is a Montegue. She says, “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Juliet complains that Romeo’s name is meaningless in the same way that if the rose had any other name it would still be the same. So with Romeo; he would still be the same beautiful young man even if he had a different name. What someone or something is called or labeled is arbitrary compared to his or its intrinsic qualities.

On the other hand, a name has great significance. In Scripture we see that one’s name is an essential part of his identity. When God named people, it was always attached to their purpose. All of the patriarchs had significant names that reflected God’s favor and purpose. Jesus gave his disciples new names. When Saul was saved, Jesus gave him a new name as well. A new name is an expression of our redemption.

When I came to First EV Free Church, I was impressed at the work that had been done here to prepare the church and set it up for success. I was shocked at the very first interaction I had with the leadership during our first visit to Las Cruces when someone mentioned that the church is looking forward to changing its name. A name change is no small deal! It is exciting!

We have received several wonderful ideas for potential names for our church. In a certain sense, we have to understand we don’t just pick a name for ourselves. A new name is something that I believe God is preparing for us. God has a unique purpose for our congregation that is essential to the work he wants to accomplish through us in this time in history. I believe he has a name already picked out for us that he will reveal to us in due time.

The irony is that his revelation will come through the hard work of prayer and intentionally seeking God as he reveals to us the core values of our church and helps show us our identity. All of these will align together in harmony.

Some of the desires that I am praying toward for our name and identity as a congregation is that we would be called by a name that is meaningful to our core calling and identity as believers; that our name would be a expression that challenges and inspires us toward faithfulness; that our name would be compelling to outsiders and generate curiosity to seek Christ with us; that we wouldn’t settle for what might seem to be the most obvious in a name.

We have a unique opportunity to rebrand and refocus the identity of our congregation to reach the next spiritual generation. People of all ages. Friends, family, coworkers. People of the highways and byways, the outsiders Jesus talked about in Luke 14. The dead-churched, de-churched, unchurched, unreached and uninspired. So many possibilities. So many opportunities. Will you pray earnestly with me and the leadership team for the name God has for us?
Hospitality Team

With the new year already underway I would like to update my list of available help on Hospitality team. I will have a sign up sheet after church this Sunday, February 19, for any who would be interested. It is not a huge commitment but one that helps make functions run smoothly. I will probably schedule a meeting in the next few weeks to coordinate and brainstorm on how we can be more efficient!

Thanks and looking forward to how God will use us in 2023!

Thanks,

Denise Oliver

Gideon Ministry

There will be an opportunity to support the Gideon Ministry, Sunday February 26th. The Gideons are an international organization reaching out to 189 countries with the Word of God to share the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. The local Gideons Camp also provides Scriptures to Hotels, Schools, Hospitals and Prisons around the area. A handout will be available this next Sunday, February 26th, to provide more information for your review (see the Gideons International website: Gideons.org). There will also be Gideon Cards (in Memory, Thinking of you, Congratulations, etc.) available to those who want to give Bibles in Honor of someone special.
Please see Dr. Eldon Steelman or Alan Fisher for more details.
