Listening Effort and Listening-Related Fatigue in Youth who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Join us for our 14th Annual Loeb Family Symposium!
Saturday, March 11, 2023   ◊   Online: 8:30am-12:30pm

Course Description
School-age children with hearing loss experience more listening effort and are at greater risk for developing listening-related fatigue than their peers with typical hearing. During this session, we will explore the link between listening effort and fatigue. We will discuss factors that contribute to each and review methods for measuring and mitigating classroom-listening challenges- some evidence-based, some anecdotal. Finally, the importance of collaboration between educators and audiologists will be discussed.

Who Should Attend?
Anyone working with students who are deaf/hard of hearing including educators, school administrators, educational psychologists, audiologists, speech language pathologists, and parents.

Keynote Speaker
Dr. Samantha Gustafson, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Utah. Her research aims to understand how children develop the ability to listen in complex acoustic environments (e.g., classrooms), including how children allocate their cognitive resources while listening. She is also interested in describing how hearing loss and assistive technology (e.g., hearing aids, remote mic systems) influence the success of this process.

This session will also feature panel discussions with young adults and adults who will share their experiences and strategies for managing listening fatigue.

Registration is free. American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) continuing education credits will be offered. OSPI Clock Hours will be available for a nominal fee.

We look forward to seeing you online this year!
