Dear Maynard Family,

Next month, the Maynard Institute launches the Equity and Belonging Newsroom Transformation Program, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Out of a diverse pool of applicants, The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and GBH News in Boston, Massachusetts have been selected to participate in the program. We're excited to partner with both newsrooms for lasting impact inside their organizations and with their communities.

Also kicking off in March? We have a series of engaging events featuring Maynard Institute staff. And don't miss our next webinar, the Maynard 200 Fellowship Ask Me Anything on Thursday, March 16 at 12pm PT. A panel of alums from the Class of 2022 will be there to answer your questions about the fellowship and more!

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Black Journalism Is the Key to a More Truthful Media Future
By Collette Watson, project director for Media 2070

"Throughout history, Black reporters and journalists around the nation have been paid tens of thousands of dollars less than their White counterparts. And yet they are much more likely to cover racial-justice protests, hold police and other institutions accountable, and take on complex beats.

In our award-winning documentary, Black in the Newsroom, the Media 2070 project looks deeply into these dynamics as we follow Elizabeth Montgomery, a reporter who was hired for her dream job as an arts-and-culture reporter at The Arizona Republic." Read more.
