Scholarships Inspire Scholarships!

Thoughtfully submitted by 2014 YSHS graduate & scholarship awardee Maxwell Mullin

I graduated from Yellow Springs High School with three scholarships to my name. Two of these were awarded by my teachers, while the third was the Eric Smith Code Dog Scholarship. The teachers' scholarships held a special significance, serving as a testament to my potential and a vote of confidence in my aspirations to teach computer science at the high school level.

The Code Dog Scholarship, however, had a deeper impact. Despite not being a particularly dedicated student, I was inspired to apply for the scholarship after being initially intimidated by the requirement for a 3.0 GPA. My guidance counselor, Mr. Smith, encouraged me to apply anyway, and I was pleasantly surprised to be awarded the scholarship. This experience taught me a valuable lesson that I have since applied in my life.

During my sophomore year of college, I came across a company called 84.51°, a marketing intelligence division of Kroger, for which I was eager to work. Despite having a GPA lower than the cut-off for their internship program, I applied anyway and was eventually hired and continue to work there.

These experiences with scholarships taught me the power they hold in shaping someone's life and career path, which inspired me to give back by creating the new Hellin Scholarship for Future Thinkers at the Foundation.  When we married earlier this year, my wife Erin and I asked our guests to contribute to the scholarship instead of purchasing gifts. The name "Hellin" is a combination of our two last names—Heilman and Mullin.

The scholarship is intended to incentivize students to research and think critically about the future they are planning for themselves, beginning after graduation. $1,750 is available to a YSHS senior interested in furthering their high school education.

Do you know a current YSHS senior who might qualify?

The deadline for 2023 scholarship applications is March 1st!

Nonprofit Events & News

Volunteer Site Up and Running for 45387 Nonprofits!

We have already onboarded many of our local nonprofits on the YSCF Volunteer Portal - Agraria, the Glen Helen Association, Tecumseh Land Trust, the YS Senior Center, John Bryan Community Pottery, the Tree Committee, and YS Schools.

The YSCF would love to schedule more nonprofits to take advantage of this opportunity to engage the community through volunteer opportunities and events - especially as a clearing house for events

In order for this volunteer portal to be valuable to your organization and our community we need your help first! We are planning a Volunteer Sign Up Campaign in February (this month) to help us launch this system to the public, but we need organizations to load up events and volunteer opportunities so there is something for them to engage with.

How to start:

You can certainly do your own onboarding, on your own time. There are many resources available.
