Co-hosted by the Gender Institute, ANU Australian National Centre for Latin American Studies and the Embassy of Ecuador in Canberra, this address includes a keynote from Former President of Ecuador, Rosalia Arteaga. Rosalia Arteaga, has been a champion of education, especially for women and girls. Her keynote address will be followed by a panel discussion with leading experts on education policy, Professor Bruce Chapman and Dr Bernardo Pereira Nunes.

NEW GI MEMBERS
We are delighted to welcome a new affiliate of the Gender Institute. Dr Salmah Eva-Lina Lawrence is a transformation strategist and a practitioner in international development. She is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Culture, History & Language at the ANU, Director of Systemic Change & Partnerships at the International Women’s Development Agency, and a non-executive board member of WaterAid Australia. In these roles, she works to decolonise international development.
In her scholarly life she researches decolonial ethics, epistemology and feminism, drawing from the ethics and epistemologies of her own Papua New Guinean and matrilineal culture within a broader Oceanic/Pasifika culture. Her forthcoming book is provisionally titled Decolonising International Development: The view from the south.

The 2023 Queer Displacements Conference foregrounds the leadership of LGBTIQ+ forcibly displaced people, and best and emerging practices in support of these communities. The hybrid event is hosted at ANU and Western Sydney University, with sponsorship from the Gender Institute.

Masha & Valentyna is a powerful documentary from Australian director Simon Target that takes us into the real lives of people forced out of their homes by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
This screening is presented in partnership by the ANU Centre for European Studies, the Ukrainian Embassy and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, together with the ANU Film Group. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the director.

Maria Thattil, one of Australia's boldest young voices, will be in conversation with Kim Rubenstein on Maria's new book Unbounded. Manifesting a life without limits. This event will include a vote of thanks by Professor Fiona Jenkins.
In Unbounded, Maria shares galvanising stories of what she has lived and learned through experiencing racism, sexism, financial hardship, intergenerational trauma, homophobia and mental health challenges.

How do Muslim women enact their identities through the Internet and various social media platforms? What does it mean for them to be active in these various forms of advanced communication technology? Although the Internet and social media has enabled Muslim women from varied Islamic currents—liberal, progressive, and ultra-conservative—to self-present themselves and enable them to speak from a position of religious authority, their online presence is not a direct sign of weakened Muslim patriarchy. Despite development in the gender digital divide, alternative and social media, offered through the Internet’s presence and affordability, remain gendered.

RESEARCH POSITION
The Harvard GenderSci Lab invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Gender and Science. The postdoc will contribute to the project “Accelerating the integration of social factors into sex-related health disparities science”. Interdisciplinary scholars with training in STEM fields and interests in the humanities and social sciences, and humanities and social science scholars with experience in engaging STEM topics are encouraged to apply.

This report examines the guidance provided by the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the response to that guidance by governments around the world. The report analyses strategies the CEDAW Committee uses to prompt governments to review, implement and evaluate health-promoting laws, the legal models implemented by governments in response to the recommendations, concerns raised by civil society organisations regarding reforms, and key issues facing women in vulnerable situations.

Co-edited by Lindy Kanan from the Gender Institute, this report from the Symposium on Family Protection Orders in the Pacific Region provides insights on how family protection orders and domestic and family violence response systems are working across the Pacific.
Medicine works better when the treatments are tailored to fit each individual person’s biology and history. A first step is increasing diversity in clinical trials, but the end goal is precision medicine.
