“TREAT THIS OPPORTUNITY WITH UTMOST RESPECT AND CARE”-DUT VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRINCIPAL, PROFESSOR THANDWA MTHEMBU

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu officially welcomed the first-year students, together with their parents, guardians and sponsors. The welcome ceremony for students in Durban was held at the Curries Fountain Stadium on Monday, 13 February 2023 and he welcomed the first-year students in the Midlands at the Indumiso Campus Sports Centre in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 14 February 2023.

Facilitating the Durban welcome ceremony was Ms Phumzile Xulu, Community Engagement Practitioner at DUT and in the Midlands, the programme director was Dr Joe Molete, Midlands, Director: DUT Midlands Campuses.

ZAKHE KHUZWAYO RECEIVES THE DUT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

Mr Zakhe Khuzwayo was crowned the Student of the Year at the DUT Community Engagement Showcasing, Pitching, and Excellence Awards 2022. The awards are an initiative where DUT staff, students, and social partners are recognised, honoured, and awarded for their commitment to selflessly serving communities around them, all in line with the universities’ ENVISION2030 objectives, values, and principles.

Khuzwayo, a postgraduate student in the Department of Information and Corporate Management, is no stranger to community engagement work and has been an active initiator and supporter of community work during his time at DUT. He currently has a plethora of projects under his umbrella project, Men Carve.

DUT’S MBATHA AIMS TO MAKE HIS MARK IN MODELLING AND GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIS EDUCATION CAMPAIGN

Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Nkululeko Mbatha has successfully walked the modelling ramp and has become one of the Mister Supranational South Africa 2023 semi-finalists. He is now a step closer, with the help of voting, to featuring in the final list, to represent the country at the prestigious Mr Supranational 2023 pageant in Poland.

The pageant is back after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, Mr Supranational SA is now under the new management of international pageant director and renowned show producer, Wayne Stafford and Celia Mostert from Centre Stage Productions.

DEAN OF STUDENTS, DR CLEMENT MOREKU PROVIDES FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS WITH FOOD FOR THOUGHT  

The Dean of Students at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Clement Moreku is happy to welcome the first-year students to be part of the DUT community. He described these students as the “best” as DUT received many applications but could only take the best, based on the available spaces for first time entering students.

Dr Moreku is cautioning the first-year students to be aware that they will meet all kinds of people and experiences that would be part of their learning experiences (not limited to the classroom) but life itself.

DR CHISITA TALKS ABOUT AND EXPLORES THE TOPICAL ISSUE OF UNHYGIENIC PRACTICES

Dr Collence Takaingenhamo Chisita, a researcher, lecturer, author and editor currently based at the Durban University  of Technology (DUT) in the  Department of Information Systems; talks about and explores the topical issue of unhygienic practices.

Currently he is a secretary  for the  International Federation of Library  Associations and Institutions (IFLA -Indigenous Matters) section.  Dr Chisita has also presented papers at local and international conferences in Africa and abroad. He has and continues to work with many universities inside and outside on matters  relating to research, teaching and learning relating to Information Sciences.

DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Nomvelo Zulu spoke to Nomvuyo Florence Mbewu, Senior Professional Nurse at the DUT Isolempilo Clinic.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “As a senior nurse my role at DUT is to make sure that DUT staff and students have access to health care services on campus.”
