FEBRUARY 2023

Hi neighbors,

Unseasonably warm weather is greeting nearly 2600 students as they return for the start of the spring semester this week after a winter session term that was a mix of local and global adventures. Engaging in interdisciplinary work on issues ranging from environmental conservation, museum curation, and printmaking in locations including Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Hawaii, and as close to home as New Bedford and right here on campus, students were encouraged to develop their own personal creative processes using RISD’s unique educational model.

Take a few minutes to read about the many adventures and find more information about upcoming events at risd.edu.  As always, contact us if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback.  Please encourage those around you to join the email list.

COVID Update

Due to continued and consistent low usage numbers, RISD will discontinue onsite PCR testing for the spring semester.  Students can still request PCR testing via appointments with Health Services. The institution will continue to monitor local, regional, and national infection levels and other indicators and adjust public health protocols as needed. Read more.

RISD Withdraws from U.S. News & World Report’s Annual Rankings
RISD will no longer participate in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual “best colleges'' rankings.  In a letter to the campus community early this week, President Williams noted RISD “does not measure the value of our students or our academic programs based on the same factors used by U.S. News & World Report.” She added the institution’s commitment to embodying the principles of social equity and inclusion were also part of the decision to separate from the listing, which uses criteria that have been “written about in critical terms and publicly questioned, and are unambiguously biased in favor of wealth, privilege and opportunities that are inequitably distributed.” Read more.
