FAQ of the month
We are seeking A-G approval of an ethnic studies course. We envision it being approved as a history course. Can you provide guidance?
Since ethnic studies is an interdisciplinary field of study, an ethnic studies course could align with the content and skills guidelines found in any of the A-G subject areas. In general, most ethnic studies courses currently on A-G lists are classified as history/social science (A) or college-preparatory elective (G) courses. When submitting, select the subject area and discipline that most logically aligns with your course material. Be sure to review the course description against the specific subject area criteria for the course. For more guidance on writing A-G course descriptions, please visit the Writing A-G courses page on the A-G Policy Resource Guide.
We intend to submit our ethnic studies course for approval in area A and think it could be classified in both the U.S. History and the World History, Cultures, and Historical Geography disciplines. What is your guidance?
Courses that integrate topics from both disciplines as defined by UC will be considered for approval. In general, however, only one subject area and discipline can be selected for a course in the submission process. Please select the most logically appropriate discipline when submitting.
Be advised of the following content expectations for the specific disciplines within area A.
- Courses listed under world history, cultures, and historical geography will:
- Focus on cultures and histories outside of the United States and, whenever possible, away from contemporary cultures like our own.
- Spend some time examining historical periods before the 18th century.
- Courses listed under U.S. history will:
- Cover a substantial period of U.S. history (e.g., at least 200 years).
- Examine U.S. history in its wider international context.
- Avoid examining groups isolated from the larger society of which they are a part.
- Courses listed under American government/civics will focus on the U.S. federal government and/or U.S. politics.
Please review the full history/social science subject area criteria for more information.
If you have an account with the A-G Course Management Portal (CMP), you may view samples of other schools' ethnic studies courses. After logging in, select Search from the navigation options. Then type possible course titles or key words into the search field. You may also choose to narrow your search by using the Filters tab.
