ARCHITECTURE AND ALFRED HITCHCOCK

The Dreamland’s Film for Thought series often screens works directed by Alfred Hitchcock. I’ve admired Hitchcock since the late 1950s, and I’m now reading Christine Madrid French’s recently published book The Architecture of Suspense, subtitled “The Built World in the Films of Alfred Hitchcock.”

Hitchcock loved to create renderings of spectacular and iconic manmade structures: Mount Rushmore in North by Northwest, or the Statue of Liberty in Saboteur. But he also depicted urban skyscrapers (Vertigo) and courtyards (Rear Window), rural roadside architecture (Psycho), as well as “houses” that did not in fact exist – the large Modernist mansion that Cary Grant climbs during North by Northwest is entirely sets and matte paintings.

French employs photographs to demonstrate how Hitchcock’s use of architecture was far more than cosmetic or esthetic. She points out that the director could make buildings illustrate character’s motivations, and that his films came to influence the architectural appreciation of society at large, even when some of his “buildings” were not real. The book contains many probing ideas but remains accessible to any reader.

So now is a good time for a Completely Subjective List (and it’s a long one) of my favorite Hitchcock films.

The Birds

Dial M for Murder

The Lady Vanishes

Lifeboat

Marnie

North by Northwest

Psycho

Rear Window

Rope

Shadow of a Doubt

Strangers on a Train

The 39 Steps

To Catch a Thief

Vertigo
