SJMC students earn top honors in major competitions
A Racial Justice PSA created by Dylan Deangelo, Abby King, McCade Gowdy and Aaron Khan-Gumm won Gold at the American Advertising Federation of Des Moines competition. They will advance to the District competition later this spring.
Amelia Sims and Kendall Hunt won a silver award in direct mail.
Lydia White, Kim Bates and Kendall Hunt won a gold award for their Food Share app and the best in show award in the student division. They also will advance to the District competition later this spring.
CJ Younger placed seventh in the Hearst Feature Writing Competition. There were 150 entries from 82 schools submitted in the first writing competition of the academic year. Read CJ’s winning story here.
Drake University SJMC recognized by Hearst Journalism Awards
Drake SJMC is tied for eighth place in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition of the National Hearst Journalism Awards. University placement is based on the highest accumulated student points in the first writing competition of the year.
Electronic music pioneer, Grammy Award winner to speak at Drake Wednesday, Feb. 22
Acclaimed Los Angeles session musician and composer Dr. Michael Lehmann Boddicker will explore the roots of human creativity in the age of artificial intelligence in a multimedia presentation at Drake University.
“The Nature of Creativity: An Evening With Electronic Music Pioneer Michael Lehmann Boddicker” will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Sussman Theater of the Olmsted Center, 2875 University Ave., Des Moines, IA 50311. The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Slay Fund for Social Justice.
Orientation leaders provide incoming students and their families with all the information and resources necessary to ensure their transition to Drake is a smooth and enjoyable one.

Apply for the Naumann Women’s Leadership Scholarship by March 10th
Drake women in student leadership are invited to apply for the Deni Druehl Naumann Women’s Leadership Scholarship. The scholarship was established by Deni Druehl (JO’78) and Michael Naumann in April 2014 to recognize undergraduate women at Drake University who inspire, have passion, and positively impact the lives of others around them. Applicants to this scholarship must exhibit a commitment to contribute their leadership skills and talents to Drake activities such as residence life, the Adams Leadership Institute, the leadership minor, recognized campus student organizations, and/or University sponsored activities, e.g. Panhellenic Council, Residence Life, and/or Student Senate.
The selected scholarship recipient will be awarded $2,000 to be disbursed during the 2023-2024 academic year. The scholarship is not automatically renewed each year, but previous recipients are eligible to apply each year following their initial award.

Applications are due by Friday, March 10th at 5:00pm. Candidates will be notified of their selection status by early April, with the selected recipient to receive funds in the next academic school year (funds will be dispersed at the beginning of fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters, respectively).

Women in Leadership panel on March 1
Drake SJMC will host a Women in Leadership panel on Wednesday, March 1, 4-5:30 p.m., in Levitt Hall. Emily Abbas will lead four female Drake alumni from Bankers Trust through discussions about their leadership experiences. Students can meet with the panelists in a small group to ask questions or ask for additional advice.
There’s no better opportunity to learn about the issues you may face as a leader than from fellow Bulldogs who have been where you are sitting. Take this time to connect with others from across campus and help encourage each other to be the leaders you are meant to be.
