Rham's Rhamblings, in the form of a Captain's Log, FYI only:
One toe over the line, the other, at the market, with all the other piggies, stocking up on milk and bread like a dang ice storm is coming. There's no ice storm that I know of, but it's never a bad idea to be prepared. And, with that in mind as I embark upon this week's word journey, I consider a more simplified, targeted approach to my preparedness. Slower, maybe less wordy (we'll see) but overall, a message more narrowed in on a particular topic, rather than the shotgun approach of throwing out a bunch of words and rolling 'em like dice. Not this week though. But to do this, I have to first determine what it is I want to rattle on about, and since it's early on in the week and my mind is sort of on the leash right now, (it typically stays on the leash til about Wednesday***UPDATE, It’s Thursday, the 23rd….didn’t catch it in time. Good luck, folks.) I think I got this week's topic pretty well handled. Coming up April 28, 2023 (Arbor Day, turns out... I'll Google it later so I'm up to speed on its festivities and meaning and what-not. I know it’s tree related. I like trees) will be the 1,000th day (in a row) that I've not had a drink of alcohol, in any form, of any kind. Surrounded by it. Touched it, smelled it...It’s always there - always has, always will be, but as far as it hitting my lips, hasn't happened. And on that 1,000th day, I've been thinking a lot about what I could do to celebrate. Not that it's cause for celebration, but I figure doing anything 1,000 days in a row is worth ice cream or something. But, just like at any "milestone" there’s this voice of reason.... "RHAM, IF YOU CAN GO 1,000 DAYS WITHOUT DRINKING, DON'T YOU THINK YOU GOT THIS UNDER CONTROL NOW AND GO BACK TO DRINKING LIKE A NORMAL, RESPONSIBLE ADULT?"
Yes, because I did such a stellar job before, drinking like a normal, responsible adult. Why not give it another go? Yes, my mind twists and turns and gives me reasons and excuses and sometimes even cold hard facts as to the benefits of drinking again at every milestone (Yes, I said benefits..strange. Twisted. I know). And although that list is short, my mind has played this little diddy on Day 100, on Day 500, and now thinking about it for the upcoming Day 1,000. So, let's celebrate! But surely by now I've managed to conjure up an idea or two to celebrate that doesn't involve drinking? Several actually, so, yes, I imagine I'll settle for one of those activities, but, question is: will I ever drink again? Maybe. Not today though.
Time for a break, if only I knew how
It's a thought that crosses my mind from time to time. Taking a break. Time off. Vacation. I try to picture what that looks like and what steps I need to take to make a said "break" worth it at all. We've all had those "vacations" where you worked. Maybe less, but you checked an email or two. No, I think it's about time I take time... but time to what, that's the real hang up. I think, in this season of Lent, and from the sound advice from my Pastor, taking a Sabbath is where I'm going to start. Not necessarily Sunday, but probably Sunday, a day to rest, relax, not work. The real side hustle is going to be convincing all my other selves what's work and what's not. That's going to be harder than anyone could ever imagine. But, that's my responsibility, and Nicks, and Rham. All of us. Team effort too. Outside is where I'm being pulled but that's just spring peeking her head in on us this past month like a dang tease. But not the tease you remember back in college when you went to your first topless club, a little shy because hadn't yet hit summer tan season and you weren't comfortable showin' off your man boobs and front butt in the public. That's more of a shy moment really, not really a tease. I'm being called to nature, but it ain't nature callin'. It comes up "unavailable" on my phone which makes it that much more intriguing, appealing. But I don't answer. My hope is that nature disconnects me, disengages me; reboots me but I'm not getting my hopes up. I'll take what I can get though, - day at a time.
Things to do looking hot and healthy. Scroll down at your leisure. If you love Fort Smith, Love Fort Smith Out Loud! This week's LOVING FORT SMITH OUT LOUD recipient comes to us from the dentist offices of Dr. Mitch Harper, staying extra late, and taking extra time to fix me...well, a sore tooth or two anyway, on Valentine's Day (talk about a romantic date!) If you've experienced tooth pain, you know what a relief it is to NOT have that pain, and Dr. Harper succeeded! For a fella like me, where not talking can pose issues, keeping me vocal is pretty important. I always fear being still and quiet will make me stove up, but it actually doesn't. Turns out, it's good for me.
