Taking the long view: The deep time project


Architecture students address the urgent need to reframe the relationship between design and time under the direction of Cristina Parreño Alonso, a senior lecturer in Architecture. She recently designed a new class, The Deep Time Project, which launched in Fall 2022 with the support of a 2022 Cross Disciplinary Class Grant from the MIT Center for Art, Science, and Technology and the d’Arbeloff Fund for Excellence in Education.

Devising a modular system to produce efficient, scalable aquabots


The system’s simple repeating elements can assemble into swimming forms ranging from eel-like to wing-shaped. The work was reported in the journal Soft Robotics, in a paper by MIT research assistant Alfonso Parra Rubio, professors Michael Triantafyllou and Neil Gershenfeld, and six others. A global lab for teaching and practicing synthetic biology

Chess players face a tough foe: air pollution


A new study shows that even chess experts perform worse when air quality is lower, suggesting a negative effect on cognition. “We find that when individuals are exposed to higher levels of air pollution, they make more mistakes, and they make larger mistakes,” says Juan Palacios, an economist in DUSP's Sustainable Urbanization Lab, and co-author of the paper.

Millennial design authorities

 

Combining academic interest and passion for furniture, design, and technology, Jeremy Carmine Bilotti SM '21 and friend David Rosenwasser founded Rarify, a vintage, collectible furniture company. An interview in Forbes shares how Bilotti and Rosenwasser use the history of design to educate their new audiences, such as with this Instagram post.  
Lecture: Antiracist, equity-minded, and inclusive
language teaching practices

MIT Global Languages offers a language pedagogy lecture series during the Spring semester that is DEI-themed emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusiveness perspectives. Offered by Uju Anya, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Open to students, staff, and faculty.
