Actions for Week of February 13
MONDAY, FEB. 13
(1) VOTING REGISTRATION DEADLINE - NYC
WHERE: ONLINE
WHEN: BEFORE 5 PM
This is the last day to change your party registration online before the June primary. Remember, you can only vote in a primary if you're registered with that party, so now is the time to change that "Independent" or "Unaffiliated" status to "Democrat." (Dems ain't perfect but the other side is fascist, so we have to work with what we've got.)
- NATIONAL OPTION: It's good to periodically check your status as a registered voter, because purges do happen, even in blue states. Start here.
(2) ONE-CLICK LETTER TO NY ELECTEDS - NY STATE
WHERE: ONLINE
WHEN: BEFORE 5 PM
New York State legislators on the Energy and Environmental Conservation Committees are having their budget hearing tomorrow, Feb. 14. Use NY Renews' easy one-click tool to send a letter calling for climate justice funding.
(2) CLOSE RIKERS NOW VIGIL - NYC
WHERE: TIMES SQUARE SUBWAY STATION
WHEN: 5 PM - 6 PM
Nineteen people died in Rikers last year and the first death of 2023 has been reported. Mayor Eric Adams has been saying he wants to "reconsider" the scheduled closure of Rikers, but closing Rikers is a legal and moral obligation. Join Rise and Resist in communicating the message through banners, signs, and fliers.
TUESDAY, FEB. 14
THREE IN-PERSON ACTIONS - NYC
If you hate Valentine's Day, here are some righteous ways to distract yourself. (If you love Valentine's Day, you're welcome to come too!) Remember, you can stay for as little or as much time as you like, and if you can't stay at all, walking by to take a few photos for social media is of great help. Two of the actions are at the same time, but one is midtown west and one is midtown east so you can choose whatever neighborhood is more convenient!
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15
(1) DRAG STORY HOUR DEFENSE - NYC
WHERE: 222 E. 79TH BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD
WHEN: 10:30 AM MEETUP
Drag Story Hour is a national program started in 2015 in which drag performers read books to children in libraries, schools and bookstores to celebrate diversity and encourage kids to read. MAGA extremists and other fascists have seized on this program as their latest anti-LBGTQIA+ cause; they have been showing up at libraries to harass and threaten the performers, families and children, and the library staff. While this has shut down events in other cities, here in NYC, allies have successfully outnumbered the protestors and allowed the events to continue. Today, the event begins at 11:30 AM, but allies need to arrive early to claim space. Remember, if you can't do a relatively long action like this, you can walk by and take photos to share on social media.
(2) HEALTHCARE AND CLIMATE TEACH-IN - NEW YORK STATE
WHERE: ZOOM
WHEN: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Statewide and political education organizers will provide a legislative briefing on Citizen Action of New York's policy platform and practice strategic messaging with you. It's intended as prep for an upcoming lobbying trip to Albany, but even if you can't go, it's good information for talking to friends, family, neighbors, etc.
THURSDAY, FEB. 16
(1) VIGIL FOR EXECUTED IRANIANS - NYC
WHERE: 1033 5TH AVE
WHEN: 6:30 PM - 8 PM
Join Iranians and allies outside the home of the Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations, in solidarity with anti-regime protests in Iran marking the chehelom of Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini. The two were executed following sham trials, and this is 40th day after their death, which is a significant day of mourning and remembrance.
(2) EDUCATION AND CHILD CARE TEACH-IN - NEW YORK STATE
(3) PREP FOR BLACK HISTORY DAY OF ACTION - NATIONAL
WHERE: ZOOM
WHEN: 7 PM ET
A coalition of activists protesting book banning -- especially books by Black authors and about Black history -- is planning a nationwide school walk-out and Black history teach-in for February 23. Get more information about hosting or attending a walkout or teach-in on this call.
