The season of Lent

  • Liturgical Guidelines for Ash Wednesday | Feb. 22
  • The Rite of Election | Feb 26
  • Scrutinies & Presentations
Following the Rite of Election, the Elect enters into the period of Purification and Enlightenment.
    • Scrutinies are celebrated on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent with Year A readings (RCIA no. 133).
    • It is recommended that parishes reserve seating for the Elect at the Sunday Masses where the scrutinies are being celebrated.
    • Candidates, baptized Christians preparing for Reception into Full Communion, do not go through this rite. Instead, Candidates are invited to a Lenten renewal.
    • The presentation of the Creed to the Elects takes place during the week following the first scrutiny (RCIA no. 144). The presentation of the Lord’s Prayer to the Elects takes place during the week following the third scrutiny (RCIA no. 165).

  • For the sick, lonely and abandoned, may the closeness and saving mercy of Christ bring consolation and peace, let us pray to the Lord.

  • For the people of Türkiye and Syria suffering from the devastating earthquakes, may they experience the Lord in their midst through the support of the global community during this time of great loss, let us pray to the Lord.

That We May Walk Together - Pastoral Letter

On 8 February 2023, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following four pastoral letters on reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Intended as a framework for local engagement with Indigenous Peoples, the letters are the fruit of many months of listening, encounter, and dialogue with them, including through Listening Circles, the Indigenous Delegation to the Vatican in April 2022, and Pope Francis’ Apostolic Voyage to Canada in July of the same year.  Action item for Pastoral Staff

Pray for Turkey and Syria

Millions of people in Syria and Turkey were shaken awake by disaster on February 6, and found their lives, like the buildings around them, reduced to rubble. In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake, many people are seeking emergency shelter in convents, parish halls and schools.

Your generous and prayerful support is essential in this critical moment — it could be a lifeline for those women, children and elderly people who have nowhere else to turn. Please consider lending a helping hand during this difficult time.

A message from Bishop McGrattan re: World Day Prayer for the Sick

As we mark the upcoming World Day Prayer of the Sick on Feb. 11, commemorating the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Bishop McGrattan reminds us to be filled with compassion - echoing the words of the Good Samaritan traveler: "Take care of him".  Let us work hard in Canada to ensure improved access to palliative care and other services for those in need - following Bishop McGrattan's urging that "We can, and must do much better”.

Pope's Intention for February 2023

The Pope's message this month reminds us that the riches of the Church are not in its buildings, but in the people who go there. Indeed, parishes in Pope Francis’ vision are “close-knit communities, without bureaucracy, people-centered —a place where the gift of the sacraments can be found.”

Please pray the Pope's intention for February 2023: Let us pray that parishes, placing communion –communion of people, ecclesial communion– at the center, may increasingly become communities of faith, of fraternity and of welcoming the most in need. Action item for Pastoral Staff

  1. Sunday Bulletin shorts, free to use
    • As a devout Jew, Jesus adhered to the Torah – the Jewish “Law of Moses” – and he was zealous about God’s commands. At the same time, he goes deeper than merely keeping the law, he also stresses love, justice, mercy and faith. In this passage from Matthew, Jesus reveals that God’s commandments are to govern our hearts, thoughts and intentions, and not only our actions. “Tearing out one’s eye” or “cutting off one’s hand or foot” are examples of hyperbole – or exaggerated speech – which is used to make a strong point about the call to conversion. The message is that sight and limbs are to be used for God’s glory, and never to abuse others or treat them as objects. Jesus stresses the dignity of the human person, and proclaims God’s design for our lives and our interactions with others.
      • Is “following the commandments” different than living as a transformed follower of Jesus?
      • What part of Jesus’ teaching challenges you the most? What comforts you?
