Updates from the UN Network on Migration

2023 UNNM Calendar

The United Nations Network on Migration (UNNM) has made available a calendar for 2023. This calendar provides an overview of the dates of Network events, including meetings which incorporate or are dedicated to stakeholders, largely at the global level. Highlights include the fifth Annual Meeting (17-18 October), which will be held during the Network’s second Migration Week. Additional activities will take place at regional and country levels with stakeholders.


GCM Talks

UNNM will launch a series of consultations, called "GCM Talks," to support Member States, the UN system, and stakeholders to continue discussions on how best to implement the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). This series will launch in February and be updated on a continual basis.


Launch of 2022-2024 Workplan

UNNM launched a new work plan for 2022-2024 to guide their continued support towards implementation of the GCM. The work plan comes after extensive consultations with UN bodies, Member States, and stakeholders to enhance the work they have completed since 2018 to strengthen international migration governance.

The plan also builds on the May 2022 International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), a conference held at UNHQ in New York to recognize progress achieved under the GCM and help establish goals for the future in implementing it. It includes GCM indicators, UNNM tools and guidance, and humanitarian assistance strategies highlighted in the IMRF’s Progress Declaration.

UNNM’s priorities include providing support to its country and regional networks to enable them to use its tools and guidance to facilitate a more meaningful application of the GCM. It will also provide a platform, called GCM Talks, where UN bodies, Member States, and stakeholders can continue discussions on how to best implement the GCM and the new mandates from the Progress Declaration. The platform also will provide support to Member States as they prepare for the 2024 regional reviews.

Expressions of Interest to Join Workstreams

UNNM is encouraging greater participation of stakeholders as members of the 14 workstreams. With a focus on operationalizing workstream products through 2022-2024, the Network seeks stakeholders’ expertise in the planning and implementation of activities as well as in developing Network products.

You are invited to submit expressions of interest to join global Network workstreams by completing this form (available in English, French and Spanish). A first round deadline is set for 27 February 2023. The form will remain on the Network website and in the Migration Network Hub for ongoing applications on a rolling basis.  

UNNM specifically encourages regional and country level stakeholders to consider joining global workstreams. Stakeholders who are also interested in joining specific regional and country level UN Network workplan activities can send a message to mmaulik@iom.int, specifying the country or region for which information is being requested.


Discussion Space for Regional Reviews

UNNM will outline the overall framework for the organization of the Regional Reviews, in consultation with all partners, ensuring a degree of consistency and comparability across the regions, as well as adherence to the GCM's guiding principles.

Through this discussion space, and as UNNM is preparing the overall framework, it is seeking feedback from Member States and stakeholders on the organization of the second round of GCM Regional Reviews.

The NGO Committee on Migration (NGO CoM) is a coalition comprised of more than 45 organizations, with the shared mission of encouraging the promotion and protection of migrants and their human rights. In efforts to amplify our migration knowledge and advocacy messaging, we would like to prioritize sharing the work and resources of our members in our weekly updates. 

Accordingly, we are inviting you to send us your migration resources to share them with a wider audience. For years, the ACT Alliance and Bread for the World have been active for those facing the worse impacts of climate change, those who remain, those on the move, and those who will be on the move. Their new publication Addressing the Protection Gap - Human Mobility and the Climate Crisis in International Frameworks speaks to the recognition of human mobility in the context of climate change as a pressing issue of our times. It provides an insight into the topic and identifies relevant frameworks in the areas of climate change, migration, humanitarian response and applicable international law. Furthermore, it identifies gaps and opportunities for action to close the existing protection gap.
