Dear friends and partners,

This week marked the joyous 100th day of school in LAUSD. And while our school communities worked hard to commemorate this milestone, they also grappled in classrooms to respond to tragic events near and far. In response to our nation’s epidemic of gun violence, the Board just passed my resolution to explore new strategies, such as advocacy and divestment, to curtail this unrelenting horror and its impact on our kids.

At the same time, our work continues to accelerate academic progress, with high-dosage tutoring and more targeted instruction. We also know that kids need more socio-emotional support and enrichment to foster their wellbeing—which is why the District has launched new initiatives to provide students with mentorship opportunities and expand access to local arts and culture experiences

Finally, the Board commemorated Black History Month this week, with a renewed commitment to center the historical figures, events, and contributions of Black Americans in our curricula, and to center the lived experience of our Black students and families in our policy decisions—not just in February, but year round.

Onward,

It has been a great month of visits, events, and community meetings! I was thrilled to emcee the annual LAX Coastal Education Foundation Spelling Bee, join the Kingdom Day Parade to celebrate Martin Luther King Day, meet with VICA members to discuss opportunities for collaboration, and visit Calvert ES kindergartners learning about the colors of the rainbow! I was also grateful for the student leaders, educators, and community partners who spoke in support of my resolution to end the epidemic of gun violence at this week's Board meeting.

In the Spotlight: Reseda HS Student Earns Top Score at Stanford Computer Science Equity Lab Course
May be an image of 1 person and text that says 'the AVA CASTRO-DeVARONA Westchester Delegation @avaforyouthgov #cayouthgov'Yanxi Rodriguez, a senior at Reseda Charter High School in my Board District, recently earned the highest score in the nation as part of Stanford University’s Computer Science Equity Lab course. Yanxi's top score earned her the honor of valedictorian for this college-level computer science course, and she also joins the National Education Equity Lab Honor Society. While she's keeping an open mind for future plans, Yanxi knows that she'd like to pursue a career in the field of computer science, potentially in the gaming industry. Congratulations to Yanxi on this well-deserved accomplishment and we can't wait to see what the future holds!
