The Founding and Foundation of CCA

This Sunday, Christ Church Anglican will celebrate its Founder's Day that occurred in 1733.  CCA was the first church in Georgia that was also founded at that same time.  What has sustained CCA since then to today is not a charter or government authority.  CCA is sustained by its foundation on Scripture, the Lordship of Jesus, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the service of the saints, all for the purpose of worship and of mission, for the one true God. Our celebration of Founder's Day, with Oyster Roast, reminds us, as Fr. Craig does in the video, to stay centered on these priorities."

ANNUAL MEETING NEWS
As part of the order of business during the Annual Meeting, CCA members will be presented for the open vestry positions. Two terms are expiring. Nominated for the two open positions are Bryan Kerr and Claudia Thomas.
  • Bryan Kerr is nominated to replace Larry Sprague.
  • Claudia Thomas will be returning for an additional three-year term.
Our thanks to Larry Sprague for his dedication and service as an outgoing Vestry Member.

Bryan Kerr first came to CCA in April of 2011 and became a member during the church’s tenure at IPC while we searched for our new location. From 2015 to 2020, Bryan served the church full-time as the Facilities Director helping turn our current building and The Whitefield Center into beautiful places for our congregation and community.

Bryan has a master’s degree from Armstrong University and possesses the gifts of leadership and discernment. He has a passion for history, liturgy, and God’s people. Bryan offers to the vestry an extensive knowledge of our buildings and properties and a servant’s heart. He is the father of the sweet Freya, and you will often see him walking her up to the Communion rail during our Sunday services.
Claudia Thomas has been a member of CCA since 1976. Claudia is the only member to serve on the Rector Search Committees for both Fr. Marc Robertson and Fr. Craig Stephans. During her membership, Claudia has served in multiple capacities at CCA, but especially she has served as a valued counselor and mentor to many.

Claudia jokes that the only leadership position she has not held is Men’s Ministry Leader. She is a Licensed Psychologist and had a successful clinical practice in Savannah. She also serves the church on the Missions Committee, Parish Choir and Women’s Renew Leadership. Claudia is nominated to serve a second consecutive term on the Vestry and as Council Warden. She possesses the gifts of mercy, discernment, and faith and uses her leadership skills and gifts in her roles in the church.

Dr. Richard Rush: Pliny’s Letter to Trajan and Peter’s First Letter to the Christians

The book of 1 Peter contains this instruction, "Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor." (1 Peter 2:17) How did early Christians seek to obey these instructions? How did they honor the Roman emperor when the Roman imperial government was persecuting Christians? A letter from Pliny the Younger, an early second-century Roman governor, helps answer these questions. In this letter Pliny reported to the emperor Trajan exactly how he persecuted Christians and how Christians responded. Pliny's letter, therefore, reveals how early Christians attempted to fear God, while also honoring an emperor that was persecuting them for fearing God. The Christians in Pliny's letter can serve as an encouragement and a model to present Christians who also struggle to balance obedience to God and to early authorities.

Richard Rush holds a PhD in Ancient Mediterranean History and joined CCA in the summer of 2022.

We live in a culture filled with tension and conflict over sex, relationships, gender, and identity.  As Christians, we are called to live like Jesus - but culture even tells us conflicting ideas about what Jesus would do!  Join us as we look at how Jesus lived a sexual ethic. This Bible study will help students:
  • understand and embrace God’s design for love, relationships, and sexuality.
  • see that they are never beyond God’s forgiveness and grace.
  • learn how to engage the LGBTQ conversation with both compassion and biblical clarity.
  • respond in compassion to those who have been abused or who believe differently.
Content Warning:  This is a Bible study about sexual ethics.  As such, parents and students should be prepared to engage with topics related to God's design for sex and love, as well as how God loves sinners and desires reconciliation and restoration.  Erin and Cal have thoroughly reviewed the material and can make it available for parents if requested.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Erin or Cal via youth@ccasav.org

Healing Prayer Service
Thursday, February 16, 7 PM

Our monthly healing service invites the healing presence and touch of the Lord into our lives, families, church, and community. We offer prayers for healing for body, soul, spirit, and relationships. At our services, there is no calling people out, requirement to identify needs, say anything or get out of your seat. We pray for healing for the congregation, and if those present would like to receive personal prayer, what they share is confidential and completely voluntary. Join us to receive the Lord’s healing and to offer your prayers for others.

CCA Ministry Opportunity

God nudges us in small and mysterious ways. Perhaps he is calling you to spend some time sharing his love with the smallest of us.  Consider visiting with our kids during a Sunday School class or a youth group meeting. Erin Macdonald would be happy to meet with you to discuss how you can become part of this vibrant ministry at CCA.

Please be in prayer for additional helpers in our ever-expanding children and youth ministries.

“Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favor, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.”

Turkey and Northern Syria Earthquake Relief

On February 6, a massive 7.8 earthquake struck southeast Turkey.  Many aftershocks continue to be felt and the devastation to this region is unthinkable.  The death toll has risen to more than 11,000.

If you are called to provide financial support to the survivors of the earthquakes in Turkey and northern Syria these two Anglican groups are both working to help those impacted.
The Joseph Fund for Disaster Relief is managed through the Anglican Relief and Development Fund. Monies collected through ARDF are sent to churches bringing relief to their communities in times of crisis.
