RIP Burt Bacharach.

About 25 years ago I walked into Horizon Records (located on South Pleasentberg Drive) and bought a cd compilation on John Zorn's label featuring the music of Burt Bacharach. I think I was familiar with Walk On By from Isaac Hayes' Hot Butter Soul. And of course I knew and loved I Say a Little Prayer from the Aretha Now record. But I hadn't realized that they were written by the same dude.. And then this Tzadik comp had Marc Ribot doing Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Dave Douglas doing Wives and Lovers, Medeski, Martin & Wood doing Do You Know the Way to San Jose, Bill Frisell doing What The World Needs Now and Wayne Horvitz doing a warped version of Close To You. How could it be possible that all these songs were written by the same person?!? All kinds of artists have played Bacharach songs from Perry Como to Nina Simone; Herb Albert to Jim O'Rourke. It's fascinating to me to think that such a wide variety of artists have performed his music and his songs seem to resonate with Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costallo, The Carpenters as well as their fans. This is surely a testament to his talent but also the universal appreciation of a great song.

Peace
JB

“There is an undisputed universality to The Beatles,” Mehldau says. “Their music cuts across cultural and generational lines, as new listeners continue to discover it. There is an immediacy and integrity to their songs that draws everyone in.

It reminds me of the Piano Puzzler on Performance Today but "in the style of" Mehldau can take many forms; from the dark cubism of I Am The Walrus to the playful ragtime of Your Mother Should Know. It's mindblowing to hear these beloved songs transformed on the piano from this modern master.

“I feel like there are two sides of me,” says the Nashville-based singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso known as Sunny War. “One of them is very self-destructive, and the other is trying to work with that other half to keep things balanced.” That’s the central conflict on her fourth album, the eclectic and innovative Anarchist Gospel, which documents a time when it looked like the self-destructive side might win out. Featuring David Rawlings, Allison Russell, Jim James, Micah Nelson

Hayley Williams and company are back with their follow-up to 2017s After Laughter and are in top form. 36 minutes of rumpshaking earworms; definitely popy but with some arty dance-punk swagger. It's ok to fun sometimes.

Revolutionizing rock guitar by adding heavy power chords to rockabilly; Wray was blazing his own trail in the late fifties with these mostly instrumental rock singles. On this compilation it's easy to hear how Wray influenced 60s psych, 70s metal and lots in between.

Bizarre Ride II
ltd color vinyl 2LP

We could not be happier to bring you The Pharcyde’s golden era classic Bizarre ride II on limited edition Clear/Yellow/purple splatter vinyl, iconic from beats to verses and included on almost every “Best of…” list regarding hip hop. This release is often cited as the antithesis of what else was happening in the west coast at the time – Gangsta rap. Not quite as “flowery” as contemporaries (but fit right in with De la soul and Tribe as touring companions for the live bizarre ride!) The back cover says “a must have for any west coast hip hop fan” but your humble author will go one step further – A must have, PERIOD.

Carl Reinecke (1824-1910)
Piano Concertos no. 1,2 & 4
Simon Callaghan, piano

CD

These three splendid piano and orchestral pieces will attract either a new collector or one who already has the iconic Mozart and Beethoven concertos and is seeking more of a good thing. Reinecke who lived a long 86 years spanned the time frame of classical giants like Schubert clear through to the early works of the birth of modernism in composers like Alban Berg. Reinecke remained a tradionalist, but in a most alluring and delightful way. These works as recorded on the ever amazing Hyperion Records label CD are just heavenly and so well crafted its a pure joy to re listen to this recording over and over, and I have.

Wilco
Cruel Country
ltd red & white or black 2lp vinyl
but it here

“There have been elements of Country Music in everything we’ve ever done. We’ve never been particularly comfortable with accepting that definition, the idea that I was making Country Music. But now, having been around the block a few times, we’re finding it exhilarating to free ourselves within the form, and embrace the simple limitation of calling the music we’re making Country.”
                                        - Jeff Tweedy

“Wilco makes an understated magnum opus. Its tone is naturalistic and understated; the album was recorded largely with Wilco playing live in the studio as a six-man band, quietly savoring the chance to make music together after pandemic isolation.”
