Tumuaki/Principal News

Welcome Home

I freely admit that it was hard to leave family and friends and return to work. I perked up a little when I met with our staff again at the start of the year. It was good to share stories and memories and plan ahead for the year.

The real buzz happened when the children started walking through the gates with their whānau. We are in the people business and extroverts like me, get a real kick out of seeing the faces and reconnecting. Who would believe the number of missing teeth, the new haircuts and the growth spurts

Several families moved away in the holidays because they could buy a cheaper family home in another area or because the new executive high-density homes were not suitable for their families, or too expensive to rent. I know that communities change over time but it doesn't stop me from feeling sad to see families move away.

Hāngī - Thursday 23 February

This year we have resorted to using the kai cookers to cook the kai because our community was not given the opportunity to let us know if they had the skills and time to prepare the genuine inground feast. We’re going ahead because, for us, it is about the kaiako of Te Ara Koropiko West Spreydon School serving and welcoming our school community. The kai cookers are limited in their capacity so please make sure you pay for your tickets asap. We will have a small mihi whakatau to welcome new whānau and staff.

If you are able to help, donate or support us for this year please contact Ryan at school. All hands on deck will mean we can make this memorable.

If anyone in our school community has the knowledge and skills to do a “proper” hāngī for next year please contact Ryan Pearce.

Enrolments

Please let us know if you have a child about to turn 5. We love surprises, but it is much easier to plan if we know ahead of time that new children are starting.

Strategic Plan and Annual plan

Please check the school website for the 2023-25 Strategic Plan. Your input is very welcome. Our goals for our tamariki should be big thinking and aspirational. If you have anything to add or a comment to make, please email the office so we can review this document and ensure that we reflect the dreams and goals of our school community.

Marina has included the 2022 achievement data. Did you know that 80% of our tamariki are at or above the expected level for their ages? We have strategies in place for the students who are not there yet. Always remember that children are not the same. They do not reach the same milestones at the same time and they don’t mature at the same time. Some children will need extra help with academic achievement throughout their school years. We know from experience that all children shine in some area. Our job is to make sure that we do everything we can to make school a great experience for children and that they are given opportunities to flourish and grow.

Attack on caregiver at George Manning

On Tuesday 31 January at about 11 pm, a caregiver from George Manning was viciously attacked by 2 males and a female. She also had her e-scooter stolen. She thinks that one of the males and the female were husband and wife. They had a smallish white dog with them. If you have any information about these utter cowards, please contact the police so we can keep our neighbourhood safe. This is a beautiful community and we are known for our kindness and support of each other.

Paid Union Meeting

On 2 March, teachers have a paid union meeting to discuss their contract claims. The school will finish at 12.30 pm. Please collect your child at that time or make arrangements for their care. We will have some staff left in the school for parents who simply cannot make other childcare arrangements. We thank you for your support of our hardworking kaiako

Cycle safety

The team from Cycle Safety are enjoying working with our tamariki. Actually, I would be shocked if they weren’t. They have commented on the children’s manners, willingness to try and ability to listen and follow instructions.

One of the real pleasures of this job is the contact we keep with ex-students. I had several text from a young man who now lives in Australia and remembers his years with us, especially Whaea Maata,  even though he had some tough times. I get regular calls and visits from rangitahi who want to keep us close or let us know that they are ok, struggling or needing help. Sometimes they call me during class time and I have to remind them that this just might rile up their teachers and they should call another time. You gotta laugh.

Have a wonderful year and an even wonderfuller time with us.

Best regards

Marriene

Nau mai, haere mai!

Ngā mihi,

Hāngī Committee

School Board

Nau mai hoki mai to our School Whānau and our amazing Kaiakos and support staff.

How lucky are our children to have the pool to cool off on these amazing summer days!!  Such a wonderful resource and so valuable for them to be able to learn water safety at school. Thank you to the Pool Committee for your amazing efforts over the holidays to keep it running for the community.  The Board are planning a meeting with the Pool committee to look into the future plans for shade and covers.  It has been a really positive season so far so we want to make sure it is sustainable for future seasons and improvements are well panned and thought out.

I would like to reiterate to all our parents and caregivers that we have a Parent Code of Conduct that can be found on our website.  Please have a read!  Our staff work tirelessly for our tamariki and care deeply about their needs and aspirations.  Please be sure to treat them with respect and kindness when raising issues or discussing your children.  If you have a concern that you wish to raise you can find our concerns and complaints policy on our school website.

We are also looking forward to the Mihi Whakatau for our new Staff and whānau at our annual Hāngī on Thursday February 23rd.  It will great to introduce you to our new Board officially and also show our new whānau our commitment to community and whanaungatanga.  We look forward to seeing you all there.

Our next Board meeting is Monday 27th February. Visitors are always welcome to observe our meetings but please let the office know at admin@westspreydon.school.nz, with at least 48 hours notice if you intend to come, so we can provide pre-reading/reports if needed.

HEALTH AND SAFETY 2023

Pōtae/ Sun-hats

Pōtae/sun hats are part of our school uniform.  All children must have a pōtae/sunhat outside during morning tea and lunchtime. Children without a hat will be required to sit under the shade.

Sunscreen

Whānau please ensure that you provide your child/ren with sunscreen. This is hugely important as children are swimming every day. We have a limited supply of sunscreen at school. It’s important to have conversations with your child/ren about applying sunscreen regularly throughout the day.

Updating contact information

As we begin the new school year, it is really important that we have your up-to-date telephone number, home address and email. If you have changed any of these details recently please let Helen or Rachael at the office know, admin@westspreydon.school.nz.

Report to the office

If you need to drop something off to your child/ren during the school day please report to the office and we will make sure that it is delivered to your child.
