⭐ SOUTH ALIVE NEWS ⭐
Happy New Year and welcome to 2023!

It has been an exciting start to our year here at South Alive with some fun school holiday events and a new member joining our team. Massive welcome to Stacey Materoa who is joining us as the Rangatahi Projects Coordinator. You can learn more about Stacey and what she will be doing here ⬇⬇⬇

I’m Stacey Materoa, a 35 year old Mum of 4 tamariki aged between 10 and 16.
I love connectivity, supporting others and learning about people, environments, and experiences.

I have just joined the South Alive team as the Rangatahi Projects Coordinator – so I am here to create involvement and inclusion, for Youth within the South Invercargill area and help support them to see and become, the best versions of themselves, while taking on the connection within their community.
I can’t wait to see this role expand!

If you have any questions or ideas for me, you can pop into the South Alive building Monday – Wednesday or I can be contacted via email:
stacey@southalive.org.nzHope to see you soon!
🌟 WELCOME TO THE TEAM 🌟
Our holidays have been full of Lego, Yoga, Parkour, Basketball and Pickleball, and of course the Play Container has been open most days with lots of young people here making the most of the fun on offer.

Southland Heritage Month March 2023

Make plans to go to some free events this Heritage Month especially the South Invercargill based events:

The Dedication of Scully Place (44 McQuarrie Street, Invercargill 9812) will take place on Friday 3 March 2023 at 11am.  ICC along with Awarua RSA and South Alive will join the Scully family in commemorating Peter Scully DCM a South Invercargill resident, Scully Place is named after Peter Scully and is Invercargill’s newest Poppy Place of Remembrance.

Join us too, at the Pod at South Alive on Thursday 23 March at 2pm to learn of the progress on the South Invercargill Heritage trail as it takes shape in a talk from Julz Orr, Projects Manager at South Alive. Heritage NZ will jointly host this session as we share some of the gems uncovered.

Anytime during the month of March you can pick up a map from Invercargill library or
www.dandavin.org.nz and explore the writings of Dan Davin in the 1930s including places in South Invercargill.

We would like thank several community minded companies that got together to help us beautify an area that needed some attention. This is our Ness Street side of our building where our rubbish bins are located. Being based in a residential area we felt the need to smart this area up.

We would like to thank you all very much for assisting us with this project, there was alot of time and effort to have this completed and working together as a team.
⭐ Clifton Tennis Club exiting in charitable style ⭐

The Clifton Tennis Club has spread Christmas cheer to Southland charities and we were extremely grateful to be one of the recipients along other great charities within Southland.

The club was formed in 1929 but declining membership eventually led to a decision to go into recess. Prior to formally winding up, its remaining members needed to decide how to distribute its funds – no small matter after the sale of its Severn St courts and section.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Clifton Tennis Club for your donation, which we have already purchased new chairs for The Pantry and the addition of a outdoor notice board as part of this fund.
Interested in volunteering? Come along to The Pod at 10am on Saturday 18 February to learn more about how you can contribute your skills or time to making South Invercargill a place we can all be proud of.

Claire and Courtney will be here to talk about the different volunteer opportunities we have and while you are here you can check out the awesome things on offer at the Pantry Village Market.

The biggest strength of South Alive is the people who contribute their ideas and time and we are always looking for more helping hands. If you would like to contribute but cannot come along on 18 February you can still contact us in the office or sign up through our website (

Are you interested in helping with our Community Events?

We are looking for current or new volunteers to join the Events Team. This involves being part of a great team that delivers some amazing events to the community here at South Alive and across South Invercargill. Some of the annual events we hold are The South City Street Party, Spring Flower Show and World Kindness Day and many more.

You can send an email to info@southalive.org.nz or call 218 6882 to make a time to come and see us.

5 advantages of mulching
  • Controlling weeds. Weeds are not just unsightly in the garden, they can also damage your plants and parasitic weeds can certainly kill them.
  • Retaining moisture.
  • Preventing soil erosion.
  • Maintaining soil nutrients.
  • Controlling pests.
A spray of Epsom salts in 10 litres of water may help counteract yellowing of leaves on tomatoes, chrysanthemums and roses. This is usually due to shortage of magnesium which the Epsom salts replaces.

Milk and water sprayed on lettuce saves then from having a bitter taste.
MANSE STREET RESERVE

Come along to Manse Street Reserve on Thursday 9 March 2023 from 6.30pm - 7.30pm and meet the South Alive Volunteers that have created and maintained the orchard in your neighborhood for you the community to forage from.

This is also a great opportunity to join up as a volunteer with South Alive and help out on working bees, no experience required, learn as you go.

Your welcome to become a South Alive volunteer, see Jess onsite or complete the online form here 🔽
