February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Ovarian cancer is a serious disease that affects thousands of women each year.  To raise awareness about this disease and its symptoms, February is designated as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. This initiative has been successful in spreading the word about this devastating illness and has helped many women get the care and support they need.

The challenge with Ovarian Cancer is that the symptoms of this disease can be subtle and easily mistaken for other conditions. This can lead to a delay in diagnosis and treatment, making it even more important to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Early detection is extremely important for ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer often does not have obvious symptoms in its early stages, making it difficult to diagnose in the early stages of the disease. However, the prognosis for ovarian cancer is much better when it is detected and treated in its early stages.  Studies have shown that when ovarian cancer is detected and treated in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate is as high as 90%.

This is why it is so important for women to be aware of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and to see a doctor if they experience any unusual symptoms. Some common symptoms of ovarian cancer include bloating, pelvic pain, and abdominal swelling, as well as changes in appetite, changes in bowel or bladder habits, and fatigue.  If these symptoms persist and cause you concern please visit your doctor.

In addition to being aware of the symptoms, it is also important for women to undergo regular gynaecological examinations, which can help to detect ovarian cancer in its earliest stages.

A diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer can be extremely distressing for women and may require extensive treatments of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and more recently immunotherapy.  This may affect women’s fertility and ability to become pregnant, or bring on early menopause having dramatic effects on sexuality, body image and quality of life.

Complementary therapies can be used alongside usual medical treatments to help relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.
  • Support groups can give women a chance to share experiences and exchange coping strategies.
  • Counselling can be very helpful, to have someone listen and help you explore feelings and upsetting emotions as well as helping to develop strategies to help people cope better.
  • Art and Music therapy can help people to become more aware of personal experiences that sometimes can’t be expressed through other pathways
  • Yoga can enhance relaxation and through gentle stretching and breath work encourage circulation, improve movement and decrease stress levels, improving wellbeing and reduction of side effects
  • Massage is a structured therapy which can improve circulation by improving lymphatic drainage and help with pain reduction. Therapeutic touch can help clients to reduce stress levels
  • Meditation uses breath work and concentration to help relieve anxiety and stress. This can help people to have more clarity around decision making and help them feel more in control at such a challenging time.
The Cancer Care Centre offers many of these therapies on a sessional or group basis. Please get in touch with us to find out more about our services.
