FOUR DUT ENGINEERING STUDENTS TO JET OFF TO GERMANY
Four Engineering alumni from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) will soon be leaving for Germany to be part of a three-month Bell Equipment learnership programme consisting of 22 Engineering students from various universities in South Africa.
One of them is a Mechanical Engineering graduate, Mr Mondli Mchunu (32) from Hammarsdale, who returned to DUT in 2018 to complete his qualification after dropping out in 2011 due to financial reasons.
Recalling his journey at DUT, Mchunu said he enrolled at the university in July 2009 for his Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering. However, as a self-paying student, his journey was rather a difficult one.

One of the challenges the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) Projects and Campaigns Officer (Midlands), Zwakele Mkhize is currently facing is explaining to students that the SRC does not need to be violent when raising their concerns.
Mkhize (21) originally from Johannesburg but now residing in Pietermaritzburg is currently completing her third year of her National Diploma in Accounting.
Speaking about her role, she is expected to be the coordinator of planning and execution of all events that have to take place in the Midlands campuses in a way that is going to create a good image of the institution.
KHANYI ADVISES STUDENTS TO PRIORITISE CREATING A BALANCE BETWEEN WORKING HARD AND LEISURE
Owethu Carina Khanyi is a third-year Screen Arts and Technology student who has always aspired to be in the world of creatives. She is currently embarking on a journey to becoming a filmmaker who will not only create productions that will entertain but also impact and change the lives of mass audiences.
Khanyi is also the recent winner of the Sharon Wilson Award, bagging R10 000. The Sharon Wilson award was established more than 30 years ago for the top English and Communication student to honour Mr Clive Wilson’s late wife, Sharon Wilson, who used to work in English and Communication at DUT.
Durban University of Technology (DUT) congratulates its former student, Mr Zakhele Madida, popularly known as the musician Zakes Bantwini, for winning a prestigious Grammy Award last night, Sunday, 05 February 2023.
Bantwini, who studied Jazz in the former Music Department at DUT’s City Campus in Durban, received the award alongside Wouter Kellerman and Nomcebo Zikode, after winning the Grammy for Best Global Music Performance for their hit, Bayethe.
Speaking on stage with his Grammy Award in hand, Bantwini said, “I just want to say, we are coming from Africa, South Africa. And this moment right here to anybody who’s in Africa just proves and affirms that every dream is valid.”
BEING A STRATEGIC AND INNOVATIVE THINKER ALLOWS BALIRAM TO EMBRACE NEW CHALLENGES
Having a passion for engineering and solving complex problems led to alumnus Shaeel Baliram to choose a career in the field of electrical engineering.
The 28-year-old, who is originally from Merebank, Durban, currently resides in Port Elizabeth, where he is currently employed as an electrical engineering GIT (Graduate in Training ) at Adient, a leading automotive manufacturer.
The former Durban University of Technology (DUT) graduate with a Bachelor of Technology Degree (Btech) in Electrical Engineering: Heavy Current; graduated with Cum Laude and the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award in 2021. Baliram also received a membership to the Golden Key International Honour Society.
Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “My role at DUT is planning the day-to-day operations for the Team Shared Services which I lead. Our team’s core competency is administration duties, however, I do advise on Human Capital Service (HCS) queries when approached.”
