This Sunday in Church

This Sunday is the 6th Sunday of the Epiphany on the church calendar. February 12th on the secular calendar and yes, Super Bowl Sunday on the American calendar. I knew that my sermon would somehow mix the Gospel of Luke and Jesus’ relationship to football. But then the 49ers took the “steam” out of that Idea by failing to make the Super Bowl. So, what to do? How about coming to Worship, listening to the 2nd Sunday Musical Gift, going to the Community Meals Ministry Thank-You Brunch and, along the way, gathering some wisdom from The Book of Ecclesiastes! During worship, we’ll encounter this seemingly cynical book as it provides “Strong Advice from a Surprising Source.” See you in church!

Rev Jim

Please join us on Sunday, February 12th, for our monthly “Second Sunday Postlude”, when we extend our regular postlude for some extra special musical treats! Due to a busy morning schedule, this month’s postlude will be less than 10 minutes, but will still be scintillating and colorful, as always!
Music Director Dr. John Hillebrandt and organist Kevin Manz will give another celebratory performance to showcase our beautiful STEINWAY grand piano and incomparable PIPE ORGAN.
Sunday February 19th we will welcome The Rev. Dr. Betsy Schwarzentraub as our preacher for the day.  She is a respected author and valued colleague in our California-Nevada Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Her recent book titled "Tossed in Time" offers a new and interesting look at the ancient Christian seasons as a way to help us reshape our sense of time and find our place in a larger story of faith.
We look forward to her message for us and our journeys of faith.
Peace,
Linda Caldwell

See the video for this week.  It will not be shown in class (reserved for discussion of what we’ve learned from the video). https://www.umcnic.org/2022SpeakerSeries

Family Promise Update

You may recall that for several years our congregation joined others in scheduling a hosting week for families who were struggling to survive while trying to get work and get into housing.  The vetting process enabled people who were already working very hard to get on their feet.  Some of those who used our facilities even got active in our congregation.

During COVID isolation churches could no longer host the families. Some wonderful people stepped up to offer small homes for the process but the supplies and necessities were provided by the former host congregations (we were one of those).

Eventually, all the host churches will return to hosting again, and First UMC will welcome these families in FAMILY PROMISE back to our building, along with the other congregations.

But for now, we (the host churches) donate what is needed.  The collecting agency is Safe Harbor Supportive Needs/Congregation Donations.  Mike and Regina McDoniels are the local agents and will see that our donations are delivered properly.

You can donate along with the other churches!  Below is a list of things called for at this time.  If you can supply something, bring it to church by February 26. Choose from below; other items are not necessary right now.
Future dates for a donation of any of these items are:  May 21, September 24, and December 3.

At First Church, we believe in the power of prayer. We want to lift up concerns in our community and nation continually. We also want to be joyful for how we have seen God move. Here are some topics to pray for during your week.

Pray for Alice Coleman, Pat Coleman's young granddaughter who has been diagnosed as diabetic. Prayers for the family as they adjust to treatments and new routines.

Ashley Caulkin (Irene Brown's great niece)
Prayers are requested for Ashley, her husband, and the whole family.  They are expecting a baby in April and have learned that the child has only 1/2 a heart.  They have found a children's hospital that specializes in heart issues and they will be going forward with a series of 3 open-heart surgeries. There is hope.

Pray for women across the world who are currently fighting for their freedom.

Pray for those among our congregation who are struggling with physical illness or chronic disease.

Pray for those in our city who are without a home. They need rest. Pray for more housing.

Pray for those struggling with mental illnesses. They need rest.

Pray for those who are currently suffering or recovering from COVID-19.

Pray for pacing ourselves in God's time.
