NWJP staff bids farewell today to long-time paralegal Patricia Laguna. Retiring after 14 years with the Project, Pati has helped grow the organization from a staff of three to fifteen. Known for her warm smile and humility, Pati has walked along side and supported thousands of Latinx workers in Oregon in their fight for workplace justice.
Before coming to NWJP, Pati long advocated for the rights of working people, working as a family service worker and a parent involvement coordinator at the Oregon Child Development Coalition’s Migrant Seasonal Head Start program. Before moving to the United States, Pati worked for a radio station in her native Mexico, and as a producer of educational programming in Mexico City.
Pati has been a patient mentor at NWJP, teaching new staff and volunteers to center the experiences and voices of low-wage and immigrant workers in our work. She has patiently corrected my Spanish and helped guide NWJP through the twists and turns of a growing nonprofit organization. I know I speak for us all when I say that we will miss the joy, love and sense of community she has spread through the office over the years.
We wish her the best as she takes a well-deserved retirement to enjoy time with her five beautiful granddaughters and trips to visit her family and the warmer climates in Mexico.
¡Te queremos mucho, Pati!
