The all-important admin associate is responsible for a variety of tasks in support of our mission to empower girls through music education, the creative arts, community, and positive mentorship. These tasks touch on every facet of the organization: operations, programs, development, events, marketing + PR, social media, and more.

Collaborative “team players” to the front, please! Just about everything we do gets done as a supportive team trying tirelessly to change the world, and the admin associate is undeniably part of that. BIPOC women + gender-expansive humans strongly encouraged to apply for any and all open positions.

HOW DO YOU BLACK HISTORY?
We hope you do it all year round, but we'll take any excuse to put incredible stories like that of BESSIE SMITH in front of our community. Thanks, February.

Nicknamed “Empress of the Blues,” Bessie Smith was the most popular and highest-paid (YES, get it, girl 💰) singer of her day. The singer-songwriter and composer released 160 recordings under Columbia Phonograph Company, sold millions of records, performed on Broadway, and even made her first and only silver screen appearance in the 1929 film St. Louis Blues. We love that Bessie's music bravely tackled social issues like poverty, intra-racial conflict, FEMALE SEXUALITY, and queerness.
In 1937, Bessie was fatally injured in a car accident, but Jim Crow laws kept her from getting help at the local white hospital. She was instead transported miles and miles away to G.T. Thomas Afro-American Hospital, where she died. Her grave remained unmarked until 1970 when JANIS JOPLIN and Juanita Green, a woman who worked for Smith as a child, paid to have her tombstone engraved.
