Heart disease is a general word that encompasses a variety of heart disorders, such as coronary artery disease and heart attacks. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, accounting for 314,186 deaths, or nearly 1 in 5 fatalities among females, in 2020. The three main risk factors for heart disease are high blood pressure, high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, and smoking.
A person's risk for heart disease can also be increased by several other medical diseases and lifestyle choices, such as diabetes, being overweight or obese, eating an unhealthy diet, being physically inactive, drinking too much alcohol, etc. It's vital to quit smoking, have frequent blood pressure checks, get diabetes tested and under control, have your blood cholesterol and triglycerides examined with a doctor, consume alcohol in moderation, manage your stress levels to reduce your risk of developing heart disease, and eat a healthy diet.
