Volunteers with UC Berkeley’s Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference:

The UC Berkeley Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics (EYH) Conference will be held in person on Saturday, March 11th 2023. This conference serves to introduce 5th through 8th grade girls* to career opportunities in mathematics, science, engineering, computer science, and technology. This year, we will be inviting 450 youth from the East Bay community to explore math and science by participating in diverse workshops and interacting with undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral volunteers.

We will need volunteers to assist all day with the conference. While the conference is geared toward girls* in STEM, we welcome volunteers of all identities.

Volunteers can sign up [here], and more detailed information about the EYH can be found on our [website]. Please help us by spreading the word about volunteering to make this year's EYH conference a success! If you have any questions, feel free to contact Rachel Meyer at rachelmeyer@berkeley.edu.

girls*: including transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming youth

Scholarship Opportunity: Golden State Teacher Grant Program — up to $20,000!

The Golden State Teacher Grant Program (GSTG) awards up to $20,000 to students currently enrolled in a professional preparation program approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and working towards earning their preliminary teaching or pupil personnel services credential.

Students must:

  • Complete their program and obtain their credential within 3 years from the first distribution of GSTG funds.

  • Commit to work at a priority school in California for 4 years within 8 years of completing their program.

For more information: https://gstg.csac.ca.gov/

The Voyager Scholarship for Public Service:

  • Up to $50,000 in financial aid: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college.

  • Summer Voyage: Students will receive a $10,000 stipend and Airbnb credit to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior year of college.

  • Fall Summit: Each fall, students will be invited to a summit to help define and inspire their public service journey.

  • Network of leaders: Throughout the program, students will be invited to an ongoing speaker series, giving them access to a network of leaders. This network of leaders will expose them to new areas of service and innovations happening in their fields. After graduation, they will join the Obama Foundation’s global community, providing them with Foundation resources and programming.

  • 10-year travel stipend: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 Airbnb travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This will allow students to continue to broaden their horizons and forge new connections throughout their public service careers.

Please share this opportunity widely to your networks and to students who you think may be a good fit! If you or someone you know would benefit from this enriching program experience, please encourage them to apply now. Applications close on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 3:00 PM CT.

Paving the Way: California’s Road to Vehicle Electrification

Thur, February 16, 2023 | 12:00–1:30 PM (PT)
Virtual –
Registration Required

*Rescheduled from last November*

Last August, California announced groundbreaking plans to phase out the production of traditional gas-powered cars by 2035. Reports show that, with the right policies, it is technically and economically feasible. But state and local leaders have just over a decade to transition how Californians drive and fuel their vehicles. At this month’s
Midday Science Cafe, we’ll hear from Priyanka Mohanty, Senior Research Analyst in the International Energy Group at Berkeley Lab about the staggering statistics that will result from this effort. For instance, the transition is predicted to save 150,000 premature deaths, avoid $1.3 trillion in environmental and health costs, cut $2.7 trillion in transportation costs, and support a net increase of over 2 million jobs, all by 2035. We’ll then hear from Ted Lamm, Senior Research Fellow at UC Berkeley’s Center for Law, Energy & the Environment, who will discuss a new research initiative that will work with local governments across California to develop equitable infrastructure plans that focus on the needs and capacities of the most under-resourced and highest priority communities; for instance, charging stations in communities that are less likely to have access to private and workplace charging opportunities. Join us to learn more about smart policy solutions for California’s ambitious energy and electrification goals!

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) L&S:

Any undergraduate within the College of Letters & Science with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA who is planning to write a thesis or produce a capstone project during the 2023-2024 academic year is eligible to receive $5,000 to support eight weeks of summer research related to their proposed project. We have a special pool of funds allocated to support students from math and physical science disciplines.

In addition to funding, SURF fellows receive substantial mentorship and benefit from an array of workshops that expose them to different research-related skills and outputs. Although the program is competitive, students who propose a viable project and have the full support of a faculty mentor are very likely to receive funding.

Throughout February, OURS is offering a series of workshops to support applicants through the process of writing an effective research proposal. Once students start preparing their application, they can also sign up for draft workshops and individual research consultations to receive additional feedback about their research proposals. The deadline for summer 2023 is March 1st.
