GENE Bi-weekly Announcements

Bi-weekly General Engineering announcements aim to provide information relevant to General Engineering students every odd week of classes plus finals week (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, Finals). If you have a club event, available internship or any other announcement that you would like included in the GENE Bi-weekly announcements, please e-mail gene@calpoly.edu.

Note from the GENE Director, Dr. Liz Thompson

At the end of this week, we will be halfway through the school year. This is great as it means you have already accomplished so much, but it is alarming how fast time goes. Please take care of yourselves in the process of learning and doing all the things you do, in order to get the most out of your time in college.

I also want to recognize the terrible struggles happening in our world. The ongoing fight for justice in Iran and the terrible earthquake in Turkey are both things that might be impacting you personally or generally.

Please make sure you sleep, eat, and get some sunshine every day.

Let me know if you need anything! I am often in my office!

Best
Dr. Liz Thompson

Curriculum, Courses and Advising

First time students will either be changing majors or developing an Individual Course of Study during their first year on campus. Both these processes require a focused effort on the part of the student to complete.

If you want to change your major out of GENE, please follow the university processes outlined here. (https://advising.calpoly.edu/change-major)

If you are developing an Individualized Course of Study (ICS) for GENE majors, it is important to have a current ICS form on file with GENE (Bldg. 13 Room 263) and at Engineering Student Services. This is because your academic progress is measured by successful completion of the courses you’ve listed on your ICS form, and your academic progress in turn affects your registration priority. You will also want to make sure your courses are approved before taking them.

The ICS form should be filled out electronically using one of the fill-in PDF forms: Current ICS Form / Catalogs Prior to 2022-2026.
