Some Words from Father Ed
Here’re some words for the Grapevine newsletter!
  1. This coming Tuesday, February 14th St Patrick’s, will host the Deanery Clergy gathering we call Clericus. We meet every two or three months to share news of our own parishes and together consider collaborative ministries.

  2. Lent is almost here. The first event will be The Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper hosted by the Men’s Group with substantial help I am sure from the ladies who usually run the kitchen.

  3. The Ash Wednesday liturgy will be celebrated twice for your convenience, once at 10:00 a.m. lead by Mother Karen King and again at 5:00 p.m. with me as your officiant.
Ashes from our own palm tree will be distributed.

  4. The next Vestry meeting is on Thursday February 16. Of course, we will be looking at the budget again and we will talk about a vestry training day sponsored by the Diocese in March and our own vestry retreat in the near future. Pray for us.

  5. Finally, and most important, Canon Mary is doing well, but recovery is slow, we will be glad when she has healed completely and is back with us. Pray for her.
And that’s all the news that’s fit to print.

    Ed+

Join us for a “town hall” meeting on Sunday, February 26, after the service about the parish finances. Have you ever wondered:
  • What are the uses and rules about all the named funds we have?
  • What are all those statements about?
  • How does the vestry ensure that the financial procedures are sound and followed?
The vestry and finance committee will do our best to explain the 2023 budget in detail and answer your questions.  Please email questions you already have to Wendy Wood at wenfenben@comcast.net so we can be well prepared.  We will have a light lunch and then dive in.  Please sign up in the parish hall or email Bobbiejo if you plan to attend in person or via zoom.

St Patrick's
Pop-Up Food Distribution
Eleanor Albon and her Team were back again for the St Patrick's Food Distribution! We are so thankful St Patrick's can allow space for the Food Bank to giveaway food and we are especially thankful for Eleanor who has gathered volunteers  to distribute food and has kept this ministry alive within our community! Below is her thankful recap!

Thank you to Pam/Larry, Merle, Lauri/Tim, driver Ron and rep Arturo.  56 households/194 individuals received food tonight from REFB in St Pat's parking lot!

To say this was our busiest, craziest ever distribution is an understatement!  There were 8 cars parked in line at 4:15 ahead of our scheduled 5:00 start!  At one point, Arturo motioned the cars into a double line so they would not back up onto Hwy 12!

We've never had so many cars picking up for two and three families.  That, plus the large variety of and large amount of veggies, fruit and meat, kept the volunteers scrambling to keep the cars flowing.  The last car left at 5:54!  Fortunately, it got some of all foods.  Arturo was able to return the little left to REFB.

Again, our wonderful volunteers made the distribution a total success!  They worked together and adapted as the need arose.  Tonight there are 194 neighbors + 6 volunteers who are going to bed happy!  Praise the Lord!

Scheduled for Feb 21 are Chris/Lynn, Susan, Mary L, Carolyn W, Lauri/Tim and Kerin.

St Patrick's Welcomes Nomadic Shelter
On February 4, Saturday, we hosted the Nomadic Shelter from Redwood Gospel Mission.  There were 14 volunteers who prepared the meal, served it, and cleaned up afterwards.

We hosted 10 guests and four staff from the Mission and everyone including the volunteers, enjoyed the dinner of roasted chicken thighs and drumsticks, roasted potatoes, green beans, dinner rolls, ambrosia, and homemade cookies.  There was an assortment of both cold and hot beverages.

Our guests were very appreciative of the warmth of Stevenson Hall and the hot dinner.  Several spoke of their gratitude.  They enjoyed the conversations at the table with us.  Staff commented that they especially like coming to St. Patrick’s because we are able to provide a hot meal along with our version of Radical Hospitality.

The volunteers were Ron Keith (makes great ambrosia!), Karen Borgfeldt, Dakota Borgfeldt and friend David, Karl Mutch, Shona Burns, Fr. Ed, Eleanor Albon, Karen King, Merle Holtzen, Wendy Wood, Bernadette Gibb (best bargain shopper) and Rich Randolph.

The entire meal, which served 24 people, came to a total of $50.39.  We also served a casserole dish frozen from the January Shelter night.  There was plenty of food, enough for seconds.

It was a very rewarding and faith-affirming experience for all the volunteers.

The next Nomadic Shelter, probably the last until October, will be on March 4.

Please contact Betsy Randolph at (408)981-2024 if you are interested in being a volunteer.

Blessing Bags
Rich and Betsy delivered 24 Blessing Bags to Redwood Gospel Mission and the staff there were so pleased to get them.  Though the recipients may not have a way to heat the pasta in a can, they are nevertheless grateful to have something to eat.  St. Patrick’s showed that we care about all our neighbors and are eager to help.  Please keep up the good work!
The next deadline is February 12.  Please call Betsy Randolph at (408)981-2024 if you have any questions.

What Will You Do Differently During Lent?
If you are looking for some kind of discipline to practice for Lent ( giving up candy or booze doesn’t cut it ), you might read the following article which also appeared recently in the Press Democrat. The Press Democrat was careful to say it “doesn’t necessarily reflect the Press Democrat’s editorial board’s perspective,” but it sounds reasonable enough, so take from it what you will. The particulars are pretty direct, but the underlying sentiments have a gospel ring.
Laurie Boone-Hogen brought it to our attention.
