Dear <<First Name>>,

Since becoming Minister of Municipal Affairs, I’ve had the opportunity to visit 34+ wonderful B.C. communities and have important conversations with local elected officials regarding their future growth plans.

More people are choosing British Columbia as their home than ever before. This is accelerating demands, not only on the housing supply but also on community infrastructure and amenities.

To help, our government is giving local governments $1 billion dollar to address infrastructure and amenities needs, such as affordable housing, roads, parks, and community centres.
Together, we are making our communities stronger and more liveable for families.

Thank you to UBCM President Jen Ford, and DIVERSEcity Chair, Upkar Tatlay for joining us.

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

BC Throne Speech outlines plans to build a stronger, more secure future

The Throne Speech outlines our government’s plan to tackle the big challenges now and build a stronger, more secure future for everyone. Instead of pulling back, cutting services or making people pay out of pocket for private health care, we’re putting the surplus back to work for people.

BC will formally recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Our government is committed to lasting and meaningful reconciliation with the Indigenous Peoples of B.C. This new provincial statutory holiday responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #80 – which called upon the federal government to establish a statutory holiday to honour survivors, their families and communities. Having a provincial statutory holiday means eligible B.C. workers will be able to observe September 30 with a paid day off or receive payment at premium rates if required to work.

BC Introduces stronger protections against white-collar crime

We’re making sure BC Securities Commission continues to have the tools it needs to ensure the rules are followed and people’s financial well-being is protected. These changes will help protect people from investment misconduct through improvements to the BCSC’s ability to investigate and crack down on white-collar crime. People want to know that the investment market is fair and honest – it's money people count on for their retirement or their children’s future.

Communities benefit from disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation funding

$23.4 million from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund will support communities to better prepare for, mitigate, and respond to climate-related emergencies.
