One of the biggest enablers one can do for better shooting, athletic, and general all round performance is getting their core to be strong. The abdominal muscles are what connect the top and bottom parts of the combat chassis and create the ability to channel power from the legs into the upper body or to use the arms to initiate explosive, aggressive movement.
In addition to improving your shooting, a strong core makes it easier to lift and carry things. It simplifies climbing over things and helps the body safely generate rotational torque when it comes time for throwing something/someone. This is most noticeable when wearing a plate carrier, chest rig, or needing to move quickly with a rucksack.
Over the last two years, your newsletter author has found very good success in using a routine he got from one of his climbing partners. Give this tabata a go 3 to 4 times a week.
Two times through, each exercise for 30 seconds with 5 seconds between exercises
- Leg lifts
- Flutter kicks
- Cross overs (move legs horizontally back and forth like scissors)
- Superman (lie on stomach and fly like Superman)
- Boat pose/V-sit/Hollow-hold (Sit with your arms/legs elevated off the ground)
- Toe Touches (Lie on back with legs extended vertically. Reach for the opposite side toes)
- Ukrainian twists (See boat pose, but alternate touching both hands to a side)
- Plank
- Side Plank
- Side Plank (do the other side)
Unfortunately, the visible six pack is more related to diet and body fat percentage. However, doing the above 3-4 times a week for a month will create a noticeable increase in general performance.
