SAIntS Family Newsletter 20
Friday, 17h February 2023
Dear SAIntS Family

It's hard to believe that we have reached the midpoint of the school year but what an action packed year it has been so far! Have a safe and wonderful midterm break with your families
Operation Smile - SAIntS Recognition

We end this half-term with some rather good news. Lily, 10C has been nominated to be a sponsored delegate representing Saint Andrew's International High School at this year’s International Student Leadership Conference organised by Operation Smile. This is an annual leadership conference that will, this year, take place in El Pueblo resort in Lima, Peru in July.

This nomination comes after a rigorous application process in which Lily was successful following her strong application and her track record of raising awareness on cleft lip and cleft palate.
Well done, Lily, we are very proud of you!

SAIntS is going to Lilongwe
This year we are doing an extra marketing visit to Lilongwe on the 10th March to reach out to prospective students and their parents. Please help us spread the word, especially if you are a Lilongwe parent. Details are in the image below. Thank you, as always for your support.
SAIntS Outreach - chlorine distribution
Our SAIntS students and teachers went out once again to distribute chlorine this week. The venue was at Makata Primary School in Ndirande, and Mr Troughton and Mr Wella were accompanied by Lily, Tamandani and Sangalatso, three of our year 10 boarders.
We donated over 100 bottles of chlorine, all of which were taken in just a few minutes.
The MP's representative, Mr Njoka, who organised the event on the ground, said that there are still many area in Ndirande where the people have not had any chlorine, and that people are desperate for this program to continue. Every family knows someone who has been in hospital because of cholera, and many know of someone who has died.

Power For Good Ambassador Training
Power4Good is a central part of our determination at SAIntS to combat bullying in all its forms. It is a student-led team of two ambassadors per year group, who provide support to their peers and report to teachers where necessary. Yesterday the team received some training from Mr Izzett at Annie's Lodge Nyambadwe conference room.
Michiru House Social Responsibility Update

Following our successful charity week before Christmas we were able to use the funds raised to support some of the vital projects that Hopeful Hearts carry out.  Items provided  included:
  • 20 000 bricks to contribute to sanitation building work
  • Multiple bales of soya and sugar
  • Multiple boxes of cooking oil and soap
All the above contributions will be distributed to vulnerable families during this challenging rainy season.
Michiru House on behalf of Hopeful Hearts Charity would like to thank the SAIntS family once again for your generosity and support in enabling this good work to take place.
Tuckshop - reopening soon
Opening after the midterm break, please check out our new delicious menu!
SAIntS reaches 1000!
What does 1000 mean you may be asking yourself? Well, since the Geography Department established a weather station on the school site nine years ago, we have been keeping a daily record of the weather, including precipitation.
The stormy weather over the weekend that resulted in fallen trees and flash floods, deposited an incredible 131mm of rain on the school site. This has brought the cumulative total recorded rainfall in this academic year (since the rains started in October) to 1138mm.
On average, we receive around 800mm of rain each year, so we are likely to exceed the average by a significant margin by the time the rains come to an end in Term 3.

The SAIntS Family - Introductions
Over the coming weeks I will introduce some key members of our administration and Support staff.

This week we focus on Mrs Pemphero Kacholola, our Admissions officer, who took up her post in July 2022. Pemphero looks after all our new admissions and is often the first smile to welcome families to the school.
Pemphero graduated from the University of Malawi with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration with a bias in Economics and has currently completed MA in Economics at the University of Malawi. For her high school, she was awarded the Malawi government scholarship to study at Kamuzu Academy International High School where she obtained her A-level and O-level Certificates.
She has 2 years of work experience as an administrator from Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM), 3 years of work experience as an Economist at the Malawi National Statistics Office and 2 years of work Experience as a Human Resource and Marketing Officer at The CCAP Blantyre Synod Education Department.
As you can see, we are extremely lucky to have Pemphero's talents driving our Admissions Department.
Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition
On Friday 10th April, 28 Bronze DofE students went up to Michiru Mountain for their practice expedition. Within the first hour of setting up their tents, they were suddenly caught in the heavy rain that fell on that afternoon. Luckily no one was hurt and we quickly had some dry sleeping bags and spare tents sent from the school. All 28 students were exceptional on the trip, showing great skills in tent craft, team work and map reading.
Birthday Celebrations
Last Friday we helped Mrs Patel (Head of Year 7 / Mathematics teacher) celebrate a special birthday with a beautiful cake baked by our talented school chefs. Wishing her many birthday blessings!

Future Skills Club
In 17 years’, time, in the year 2040, it’s highly likely you’ll be working in a job that doesn’t even exist yet – and no, we’re not talking about building flying cars or developing the world’s first-time machine. The world of work is evolving quickly, which means you must figure out how to prepare for a future job role that’s impossible to predict.
This week in Future Skills, we have been discussing Astrophysics and Creative Designing. The students have been talking about the skills one needs to acquire to be a 4th Industrial Revolution designer and opportunities provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for young researchers worldwide.
Snippets from the Classroom
History
To understand the key features of the Atlantic Slave Trade that happened over 400 years ago, the year 8 history class started with researching whether slavery is still an issue today. The class collaborated with BBC news archives corner and also visited the International Labour Organization’s websites for statistics of people and countries involved in human trafficking today. To their surprise, the class learned that even though the Slave Trade was outlawed many years ago, there are more people enslaved in the world today than they were over 400 years ago. The students' research brought to light the major similarities and differences between the two trades. They not only gained a deeper understanding of slavery but also learned what they can do to help end this type of trade in the modern world.

Modern Foreign Languages

New deliveries in Modern Languages!
The MFL department has recently taken delivery of 18 new tablet devices for use in speaking and listening activities and online learning, and they are already being enjoyed by our French and Spanish students.
Here you can see one Year 7 French class recording videos for a speaking assessment this week, entitled Ma journée au collège. They had to film and narrate a typical day in school using the French they have been learning this term.
