Solefield launches 75th Anniversary

To launch our 75th anniversary (1948-2023), last Friday the whole school enjoyed a ‘Solefield Special’ double cone ice-cream for pudding, served from a vintage ice-cream van.

We then all congregated into a large '75' on the school playground where Mr Coston filmed everyone happily waving. Click on the link below to watch our exciting '75' formation.

What a great way to start the festivities.

Thank you from South Africa

Last year, Solefield parents donated clothes to a school in South Africa. Our Solefield Parents' Association (SPA) also kindly donated duffle coats and shoes to this very worthy cause.

Parent, Maria Sandler and friends started an initiative where they send items to Pretoria which are redistributed to schools, orphanages and people in the community where there is need.

This is the message from one of the schools, Mrs Sandler asked us to share:

"We would like to thank you for the generous donation of jackets we have received for the learners of PT Sanders Combined School.

Some of these learners live in shacks (informal corrugated iron structures) or houses where there is no glass or covers in the window panes. We can therefore almost guarantee that some of these jackets won't even be taken off when the learners go to bed.

Please give our thanks to all the parents and learners who have made these donations."

Reception make pizza

Reception had a fabulous time at Pizza Express this week. They loved hearing a little about the history of pizza and why the margarita is the most popular one. They found out that the margarita has green, white and red ingredients to match the Italian flag and loved creating their own pizzas. A highlight was eating them from the box at lunchtime! Delicious!

Royal Opera House Live Stream

Years 3 and 4 were treated to a behind the scenes look at The Royal Opera house working on The Magic Flute. This rehearsal was designed to be accessible to children and to introduce the different roles of the director and performer. Children were encouraged to be a monster, a bird catcher, and to try some of the vocal warm up exercises that the opera singers used. At the end, there was an opportunity to ask questions, with Zac and Samuel both having their questions chosen to be answered by the performers.

To follow this activity, Mrs Sage will be leading a workshop on The Magic Flute after half term with Years 3 and 4, and more information on this will follow after the break.

Year 7 Geography Fieldtrip.

Sustainable Development – East Village – An environmentally friendly urban development

On Tuesday 7th February, Year 7 embarked on an urban fieldtrip to Stratford, East London where they investigated the regeneration of the Lea Valley, now the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and studied a large-scale sustainable housing development, East Village.  During the trip, the boys had many opportunities to develop their geographical skills, which included reading and following maps and plans, completing sustainability assessments and canvassing the views of local people using questionnaires.

It was wonderful to be in an “outside classroom” and the whole experience enhanced the boys’ understanding of many relevant and current environmental issues.

Solefield Boys' Achievements

Raphael Cricket Success

Well done to Raphael (Y6) who has been selected to be part of the Invicta Squad for both the U11 Minor Counties Cricket Festival (MCCF) at Ipswich and the U11 County Festival at Taunton during the summer holidays. A fantastic achievement. What a great summer of cricket for Raphael to look forward to.

Richard Meets Chess Heros

Very able Solefield chess player, Richard (Y3) attended the Word Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship at Almaty in December, where he had an opportunity to watch live the competition of all major chess players, including the world champion Magnus Carlsen.

Richard had the chance to personally meet most of his heroes, chat with them and get autographs, including Magnus's. What fantastic chess encounters for Richard.

Harry Qualifies for Fencing Championships

Well done to Harry (Y7) who competed in the regional qualifiers for the British Fencing Youth Championships last weekend. Harry successfully qualified, so will be competing in May in Sheffield. A fantastic achievement, Harry. We wish you all the best for May!

Fantastic to welcome back Alumni

We had a wonderful alumni launch reunion last Saturday to kick off our 75th anniversary celebrations. We loved welcoming back old boys, parents, former teachers and staff from throughout the decades, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s right through to current!
Alumni enjoyed reminiscing with each other; they searched for their names on the leavers' boards, wandered around each area of the school and enjoyed our stunning whole school art exhibition. Headmistress, Helen McClure welcomed everyone and raised a glass to 'Solefield'!
