Cygnus Charity Day

Cygnus House have raised incredible £1,541.06 in school today through a Non-Uniform Day and stalls at lunchtime in aid of the Sepsis Trust. We have also collected an additional £614.62 for the British Red Cross who are providing emergency aid for the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Our thoughts are with those affected by these events.

If any parents would like to donate to this disaster fund directly, please follow this link: Turkey-Syria earthquake appeal | British Red Cross

Character Points and Rewards

You will hopefully be aware of the Character Points rewards system that we have in school. Students are awarded points for demonstrating one of our school character strengths in lessons and outside lessons. These are Respect, Positivity and Resilience, Making Good Decisions, Integrity and Love of Learning. When they are awarded points, students will receive an email alert to their school address, and you will receive an email to let you know too.

The points earned in Years 7 and 8 count towards the different Junior Character Badge Awards – these are blue badges. These are awarded when students reach 40 points in any one of the character points. When they have achieved all five of those badges, they achieve the Junior Award for Character, which is our highest Junior Award. This works in a similar way in Years 9-11. Students achieve the Senior Character Badge Awards (red badges) when they reach 40 points and when they achieve all five of those, they achieve the Senior Award for Character.

Students can ask their Form Tutor how many points they are up to and how many they still need to get to achieve an award. Each half term, the form in each year group who has collectively been awarded the most points wins a treat. Students in Sixth Form are also awarded points for showing good character. If you have any questions about the rewards system, please contact mlu@suttcold.bham.sch.uk

Notices from the Parents’ Association

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who supported our Year 7/8 disco last Friday. It was a massive success, we sold 320 tickets and the feedback we had was that they’d all had a terrific time again. We do appreciate your support whether it be selling tickets, volunteering on the night, buying tickets or even investing your time to take and collect your daughters on the night. It’s a team effort and we at the PA are very grateful for your involvement.

We now have some further dates for your diaries where we will need your support and volunteers:

  • On Friday 21st April we plan to host another Year 7/8 school disco. This gets us back to our ‘pre-COVID’ pattern of having two discos per year (with Bishop Vesey also hosting two at their school).

  • We also have a date for a second film night on Friday 5th May 2023. Film choices will go out closer to the date.

Parents’ Association – Match Funding

You will hopefully be aware of the fantastic work your Parents’ Association are doing to raise funds for our school. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you about the match funding scheme and how a little bit of your time could raise double the funds for the PA.

If you work for an organisation that has a match funding policy, any money you raise could be matched by your employer. Companies may match the fundraising total for an event, or for the stall that their employee is working on. Usually, the employee will need to supply them with a letter from the PA detailing the date and nature of the event, together with the total raised.

We understand that the high street banks, building societies, supermarkets and large corporations are likely to do match funding, but these schemes are not exclusive to the major corporate giants. If you work for an independent company, they may be interested in charitable giving through match funding too.

We would be grateful if you could see if your employer has a match funding scheme, or if they are willing to match fund any of our events. If you can’t help out this time, but you know the company you work for has a match funding policy, please let us know. This could be a large source of income for the PA and help us raise money for our extracurricular activities.

If you are able to help us this way, please email SAF@suttcold.bham.sch.uk and we can discuss your companies’ requirements.

Children’s Mental Health Week

This week is Childrens’ Mental Health Week. The theme this year has been Let's Connect.  In form time on Monday students will hear more about this theme and be given tips on how to connect for their wellbeing.  Children's charity Place2Be have put together tips and advice to help families explore the theme of ‘Let’s Connect’ at home.

National Apprenticeship Week

This week is National Apprenticeship Week and students have found out about Apprenticeships in form time. Opportunities have also been shared with students in the higher year groups for local Apprenticeships which have been advertised recently. Apprenticeships are qualifications that you work towards in the workplace. You are employed and earn a wage while you are training. Apprenticeships typically last from between 1-4 years. You can do an Apprenticeship from Age 16 or above. There are different levels of Apprenticeship, ranging from level 2 (which is the equivalent of 5 GCSE passes) up to Level 6-7 which are Degree Apprenticeships. Degree Apprenticeships are offered by universities, and you do not have to pay tuition fees to complete them. If you would like to find out more, please visit Amazing Apprenticeships

Emotionally Healthy Approach to GCSEs

As we approach the run up to exam season, it is important that we support our students to manage their wellbeing and workload in a balanced way to avoid 'burnout'.  The following guide has useful suggestions and tips for parents whose children are approaching their GCSEs.

The guides are packed with practical tips and ideas to support young people before, during and after exam time. Although written in reference to GCSEs, the content can be applied to any exam.

E-Safety: Supporting positive outcomes in children and young people

It’s Children’s Mental Health Week, and in support of this year’s event National Online Safety have produced a #WakeUpWednesday guide which outlines how youngsters’ mental wellbeing can be boosted by an (arguably) unexpected source: video games. Many children view gaming in the same way that they regard reading a book or watching a movie: a way to relax and unwind.

Gaming not only helps young people to de-stress and gives them a valuable sense of satisfaction when they succeed in their game – it can also develop their essential life skills (such as problem solving, co-operation and social interaction) without young gamers even realising that they’re learning things. Check out this week’s guide for a more detailed run-down.
