Learn the History of Girls Basketball in North Dakota

Girls in North Dakota began playing basketball on organized school teams during the 1890s, wearing heavy woolen uniforms and playing half-court. There were only a few teams in the beginning, and high school and college teams often played each other due to a lack of funding for transportation to distant schools.

Find out more about girls basketball history in North Dakota Studies, an online curriculum used by teachers, students, and lifelong learners.

Passionate Local Communities Embrace Smaller State Historic Sites

Some local communities have embraced smaller historic sites managed by the State Historical Society.

Lake Jessie State Historic Site near Binford is located in the backyard of the Helland family, who allows public access through their property to the site and has been caring for it since 1955. The community of Bowman has embraced Fort Dilts State Historic Site and feature it in its local museum exhibits. For years, one local historian, Dean Pearson, has printed and posted his interpretive panels telling the story of the site. Meanwhile, the Grenora community works with the State Historical Society to protect and improve the Writing Rock State Historic Site and has been involved in our most recent project of replacing old playground equipment.

French Vintages on the Frontier: The Marquis's Wine Collection Is the Stuff of Legend

North Dakota History, Vol. 86, No. 1, 2021

The Marquis de Morès kept a well-stocked wine cellar in his Medora home, the Chateau de Morès. After ownership of the home was transferred to the State Historical Society in 1936, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) members were among those enlisted to make much-needed repairs. Legend has it that a group of CCC workers discovered a stash of three hundred wine bottles in the cellar and promptly downed quite a lot of it.
