February 2023 Ranch Updates |
Cupid has struck and the horses want to express their love for all of you and everything you have done to help them succeed. They appreciate all our supporters who help the ranch whenever needed and special kisses go out to all our wonderful volunteers! |

| Toby here with your ranch report. Things have been pretty easy at the ranch thanks to our milder winter that has even graced us with some warmer spells and sun rays to soak up! Still cold enough for my volunteers to blanket me at night and make sure I am staying warm. You know how old bones are in winter! Valentine’s Day is here, and I am picking all of you to be my Valentine this year! With Nala in foster, I needed a replacement and Maggie not only has BonBon, but she has also fallen in love with the new girl, Maisie. Those finicky mares, not sure why they don’t see I am the best guy around, lol! But I know you are always faithful to me so sending you lots of kisses. XOXO Toby! |

The last month has been busy with the two new horses settling in, some medical concerns addressed and a new home for a special horse! Check out all our updates below. |

| We are so happy to announce Wasco has been adopted and finally has his forever home. He has been through a lot in his life and definitely deserved this day to come. Do you know his story? Back in 2013, Wasco was sadly on a trailer to slaughter over the border. The Equine Outreach team bought him for 10 cents per pound and saved him. Wasco was since adopted out and returned to us in early summer of 2022. While back in our care, Wasco developed a deep bond with a volunteer who decided she must have him forever. Join us in congratulating Wasco and his new mom as they celebrate true, forever love in his new home! |

Casino Casino is doing better every day! She is still confined to her med-pen but with her continued improvement, it is only a matter of time before she can get her freedom. We, of course, need to be sure she is completely healed first. But good news! She had her hoof bandages removed and changed into shoes. We are now able to let Casino out for periods of roaming if the ground is dry. Thank you to all our Casino fans who have followed her surgery and recovery, helping her through this difficult time and cheering her! |

| Maisie Maisie, one of our two newest horses, is suspected to be well into her 20's and was just confirmed to have Cushing's disease. She's in the right place to receive top-notch care in her golden years and we will be starting her on treatment right away. What is Cushing’s? Also known as PPID, Cushing's is a dysfunction of the pituitary gland and can affect the entire body. Symptoms of untreated Cushing's disease mainly include long hair coat, laminitis, impaired/dysfunctional immune system, muscle loss, and metabolic disturbances. We currently have two herd members at the rescue that are confirmed to have Cushing's - Maisie & BonBon. |

Mocha Our friend Mocha is a bit of a complicated fellow. One of the things we are working with him on is his anxiety, which can lead him to have periods of stress. We have become concerned about Mocha having Equine Gastric Ulcer Disease. Our veterinary team recommended an endoscopy procedure to take a look. Mocha was sedated and the scope was passed up his nose and into his stomach. A gastric ulcer was found in his stomach. Treatment for gastric ulcers is generally a once daily medication for a month. Only the best for our boy though. We hope once this issue is treated, we can continue our journey to helping Mocha lead his best life! |

Can you help Maisie, BonBon & Mocha with their medications? |
We are very fortunate to have such good medical care with our team and Bend Equine Medical Center to be able to catch and treat any conditions that arise in our herd. Maisie, BonBon and Mocha all have conditions that are easily treated with daily medications. Some are temporary and some for life. But they all come with a cost. But it’s one of the many things we do to give our herd the best life possible! Treatment for Cushing’s for both Maisie and BonBon will be for life with a daily medication. The cost for one horse is $3 a day. So, to treat both these wonderful horses, it is $6 a day or average $180 a month. For Mocha, treatment for gastric ulcers is a daily medication for a month. The monthly cost is approximately $1,000. You can help contribute to their medication costs, by going to our donation page. |

Thank You to our Volunteers! |
| Our horses and mules usually get all the attention, but what about all the folks behind the scenes who make Equine Outreach possible! Did you know there are over 30 humans who volunteer their time caring for the Equine Outreach herd? At this time, Equine Outreach is 100% volunteer run in the daily care of our herd, 7 days a week in heat, snow, and rain keeping our rescues fed, cared for, and ensuring they have safe and comfortable spaces to roam and rest. Our volunteers are simply the best and we could not do it without them. Let's give them some love this Valentine’s Day! |
