An interview with Shelby Zlotkowski, Owner of The Corner
Please give our readers some background about yourself.
My name is Shelby Zlotkowski and I am an Ohio native. My husband, Sebastian, and I have been married for almost four years and we have a two year old daughter named Emersyn.
We live an active and very busy lifestyle. Sebastian is a full-time firefighter/paramedic for the City of Shaker Heights while I own and operate two artisan collectives, Lohcal, which is in Wadsworth, and most recently, The Corner, here in Shaker Heights.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my Morgan horses whom I compete with on the national circuit. I began riding at the age of five and cannot wait to share my passion with Emersyn who is already infatuated with horses.
Can you explain what your original connection was to The Corner and how you made the leap to owner of the shop?
I joined The Corner shortly after its opening as a maker with my hobby-turned-full-time business, Leatherwood Design LLC.
I truly credit former Corner owners, Dave Willet and Steve Meka, for helping and inspiring me to continue my journey as not only a maker, but also as a retail business owner. With their encouragement and the experience gained from my time at The Corner I took the leap and opened Lohcal, a boutique collective of Ohio makers in November 2021.
When Dave and Steve decided it was time to step back from their roles as owners/operators, we were thrilled that they entrusted us with [The Corner].
Is there something in particular about owning a business in Shaker Heights that is important to you?
The City of Shaker Heights is a wonderful place to own and operate a business. Upon my first visit to Shaker, I was instantly connected with the unique blend of history, diversity, and cultures that make up the vibrant community.
I am extremely appreciative of the support from the Van Aken District. The Market Hall is a gorgeous space and we are grateful to be a part of the Van Aken District family.
What makes The Corner special?
The Corner is a unique concept! While artisan collectives are popping up all over, The Corner provides a one-of-a-kind experience for both makers and customers. Although small in footprint, the offerings of The Corner are plentiful. We are a community of nearly 90 Ohio small businesses, who enjoy collaborating with and supporting one another. The Corner is hosted daily by a maker so I encourage customers to take a few minutes to get to know the person behind the desk and learn about their business.
What is the model for The Corner?
The Corner is home to a community of Ohio small business owners. All products on the shelves are handmade. Varying each month, our space typically allows around 25 makers to retail their goods. All items are curated so that categories are well represented but not overly saturated. Our agreement is monthly, with most makers staying two or three months at a time before rotating out allowing for a space to open for the next maker. Open seven days a week, The Corner is hosted daily by makers. The unique staffing model allows the makers and customers the opportunity to meet one another and form a connection.
Does The Corner have a "typical" customer?
There is truly something for everyone at The Corner! Our “typical customer” is someone who loves supporting local businesses.
Do you have any business advice or thoughts to share with other business owners who may be reading this article?
Immerse yourself! Join the Chamber of Commerce, local organizations, volunteer and network! I have learned so much and formed numerous friendships through working together with fellow creatives. Since starting my first business in 2017 my motto has been “Community over Competition”.
