Dear <<First Name>>,

It is a pleasure to connect with our U.S. Patrons List for the release of CARNASCIALE 2020 and IL CABERLOT 2019.

In the past we have often released these wines separately, typically a few months apart. Unfortunately our very limited production of 2019 CARNASCIALE did not allow us to do a mailing list release so we decided to bring our two top wines together for this release.

This combination will hopefully encourage you to add both of these wines to your collection and experience them side-by-side; gaining a deeper appreciation and understanding of these unique 100% Caberlot wines.

If you have yet to experience the Caberlot grape variety, PODERE IL CARNASCIALE is the only winery in the world to produce and bottle this rare grape that is thought to be a natural crossing of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Between CARNASCIALE and our flagship IL CABERLOT, these are two of the rarest wines you will find in Italy, if not the world.

We hope that you enjoy these limited-production wines from our estate. Also please check your local wine events calendar, as we will be traveling to the United States in March with the Slow Wine 2023 US Tour and it would be our pleasure to meet and taste with you in person!
CARNASCIALE IGT Toscana 2020

Our eponymous bottling is born in the vineyard, principally the 2 younger plots Perelli and Volpaie, with a selection of grapes that are hand-picked and pre-sorted. By the time the fruit arrives in the cellar, only the most perfect, ripe and healthy grapes make it into the production of this wine. The grapes were pressed and immediately the must showed great intensity and vivacity – both certainly enhanced by the rather cool weather during the harvest period. Fermentation in stainless steel was slow and spontaneous, allowing the wine to dictate the speed at which it was ready to be aged and further bottled. The wine was then aged for 22 months in a 40 hl 'botte grande' built by Marc Grenier in Burgundy, bottled as CARNASCIALE, then matured for 6 months further in bottle. 10,390 bottles produced.

The 2020 vintage will of course be remembered for the global challenges that made our work a bit more complicated. However nature, having no issue with COVID-19, fared quite well in this vintage. Right from the spring, we saw great promise in the vintage with regular budding and no frost that led to a dry summer with rains at just the right times to refresh the vines. The harvest resulted in a year of excellent quality - a lively set of wines that have very fine texture and a vibrant, softer structure that are perfect for youthful enjoyment.
  • 95 points, Wine Spectator (2019 vintage) - “A pretty red, this features floral, black currant, blackberry, cedar and iron aromas and flavors. Firm yet balanced, with the fruit core lingering on the resonant aftertaste. Beautifully constructed and expressive. Caberlot. Best from 2025 through 2043. 650 cases made, 100 cases imported.”

  • $N/A per 750ml bottle
IL CABERLOT IGT Toscana 2019
Our flagship red wine is named for this rare grape variety that we are able to further cultivate and revive, today on 6 single vineyards. The 2019 vintage is a selection of the very best barrels of the vintage. The wine is crafted first from the hand-harvesting of each plot within our six vineyard sites, allowing them to ferment spontaneously, and then age each separately in small French oak barrels for 22 months to maintain its distinctive quality and identity. About 60% of new wood for this vintage.

The focus of IL CABERLOT is to produce this wine from the best vines of the estate, resulting in a wine of the greatest aromatics, depth and structure possible. This creates a wine of beautiful purity, but also enhances the potential for long cellar development.

The barrels produced for IL CABERLOT are then bottled only in magnum (with very limited double magnums) which continue to age for a minimum of 16 months in our cellar before release.

The 2019 vintage was one of perfect ripeness due to the high summer temperatures. Despite the record-setting heat in our region, our continuous focus on leaf and canopy management allowed our grapes to ripen and gain the warmth of the summer sun without damage to the fruit. As the summer ended, some refreshing rains before harvest reinvigorated the vineyards, giving a burst of energy into the clusters to bring a vibrant acidity to the concentrated fruit profile. 2019 is a profound, vibrant and balanced vintage that will continue to develop for decades to come, particularly in larger format bottlings. 3.450 Magnums produced.
  • 94 points, James Suckling - “Fragrant nose of blueberries, violets, peppercorns, sage, five spice and lemon leaves. Medium-bodied with firm, fine tannins. Compact and firm. Lots of character, with perfumed tea-leaf notes at the end. Better from 2024.”
