Direct from Alto Adige to you.

Dear <<First Name>>,

It is our pleasure to connect for a very special release from our estate, tucked into the Dolomite Mountains of Alto Adige.

As you may know, we harvest our own estate vineyards as well as partner with growers across the region to create a vast array of wines utilizing both historic varietals and grapes not traditionally grown in dolomitic soils. To give a deeper understanding of this range, we organize these wines under three categories.

We are tremendously excited to share these ranges with you through the lens of one of the world’s most popular white grape varieties and a historically important grape for our estate - Chardonnay.

Classical Grape Varieties - An exploration in the diversity of our region. Produced from grapes supplied by our partners.
  • Chardonnay 2022

Compositions - A study of each individual detail in the vineyard and cellar. Wines with strong character blended from top-class vineyards. Wine is an interplay between different components.
  • GAUN Chardonnay 2021

Masterpieces - A powerful expression of the individuality of each estate, produced from our own biodynamic vineyards.
  • LÖWENGANG Chardonnay 2020

Each Chardonnay represents the extreme diversity in styles that can be achieved here in the Dolomites. We hope that you are able to discover the distinctiveness of each wine by tasting them side-by-side, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of Chardonnay and each tiered bottling.
Chardonnay 2022
Chardonnay has a long history in Alto Adige; first introduced by Archduke John around 1835. It was originally known as Yellow Pinot Bianco and finally gained popularity in our region in the 1980s with the creation and acclaim of our Löwengang estate Chardonnay in 1984.

This Chardonnay is the perfect representation of Alto Adige as a whole - combining grapes from sites around Magrè, Cortaccia, Salorno and Pochi that have the chalky gravel soils that are perfectly suited for this grape variety. Some of these vineyard sites have Chardonnay vines that date back to 1944. Once the grapes are harvested, sorted and arrive at our cellar, they are pressed and the juice goes through spontaneous fermentation. A portion of the wine is left to rest on its lees until Christmas, with the remainder stored outside in naturally cold temperatures.

Once the aging in stainless-steel and concrete tanks is completed, the wine is bottled and released shortly after to capture the natural acidity and freshness that comes from Alto Adige Chardonnay. This is a wine to be enjoyed fresh and youthful upon release.

  • 91 points, James Suckling (2021 vintage) - “The bright spring-blossom, crisp pear and flint aromas gently pull you into this fresh yet creamy chardonnay. Then some solid tannins come through to give the rather juicy finish some grip and energy. Drink now.”

Grape growing in Magrè, the area from which our GAUN and LÖWENGANG wines are sourced, has shaped the history and economy of the village community for centuries. It is characterized by a rich variety of contrasts in terms of its culture, geology and microclimate. Located in the Bassa Atesina, on the very southern border between the regions of Alto Adige and Trentino, at 210-240 meters above sea level. Magrè lies on a talus cone, formed millions of years ago by fossil deposits. The stoney, sandy, and deep soil has very high content of dolomitic limestone.

The climate is influenced by all manner of different factors. Looking southeastward, the morning sun warms the vineyard land early in the day. The Ora, a warm wind from Lake Garda, blows through the valley and provides warmth and good ventilation in the early afternoon. In the evening, chilly winds cool the area down, making for a pleasantly fresh temperature at night.
GAUN Chardonnay 2021
This Chardonnay is named after the original owners of the Löwengang estate dating to 1369 - the Gaun family, who were knighted in 1674 with the title "Von und zu Löwengang". It was in 1934 that Alois Lageder III saw the excellent Chardonnay planted at this site, leading to his purchase of the estate. Since 2009, GAUN Chardonnay has been produced from organic and biodynamic vineyards surrounding the estate, all grown in soils high in Dolomitic limestone as an homage to this history. These soils yield an incredibly textured, mineral-driven wine that conveys the personality and potential of Alto Adige Chardonnay.

Each vintage of GAUN is created from a vineyard selection from vines ranging up to 45 years in age. This vast range of fruit profiles creates a wine of beautiful layers and texture. Once harvested and sorted, the grapes are fermented with natural yeasts and then rested on their lees for 10 months. The aging is brief, with 10 months of further development in large oak casks and stainless-steel tanks. GAUN is a beautiful, bright and complex Chardonnay that is best enjoyed within 6 years of its vintage release.
  • Winery Tasting Notes - “Beautiful clear, bright gold-yellow with a green shimmer. The nose is lightly aromatic with notes of apricot and mango fruits with a slight buttery hint. Gaun is medium-bodied, lively, juicy with opulent structure and a dry finish.”

LÖWENGANG Chardonnay 2020
LÖWENGANG derives from a historical residence of the same name in Magrè that has been in our family since 1934. First produced in 1984, Löwengang became the first white wine from our region to be recognized on a global scale. This single vineyard Chardonnay has played a major role in establishing Alto Adige as a top quality wine region and as a result, catalyzing our estate’s growth.

The Löwengang estate vineyard is comprised of several small plots that respond quite differently to the influences of the local climate and vintage variation. What makes every vintage of this wine so unique is the combination of these natural details and our corresponding response to the vintage.

The grapes are hand-harvested from the sandy, gravelly soils of the vineyard, sorted, pressed and allowed to ferment spontaneously in French oak barriques and large oak casks. The wine stays on its lees for several months to create further texture and is then aged in bottle before release. Löwengang is a fantastic example of ageworth Chardonnay, with up to 15 years of cellaring potential, while at the same time can be enjoyed in its youth.

  • 93 points, James Suckling (2019 vintage) - “An unusually ethereal expression of the chardonnay grape, with delicate lemon-curd, crisp pear and toasted white-bread aromas. Barely medium-bodied, but it has a refined texture there, plus flint and wet-stone complexity. The positive tannins carry the finish some way out and it ends with a splash of lemon-curd character. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.”
