Message from the Director

Vision? Culture? Reputation?
The Key Elements of Building your Organization

By Rhoda Olsen

Every organization, large or small, profit or non-profit, has a distinctive vision and culture. Culture is often hard to define, but everyone feels it. Culture is about the way people treat one another.  Sometimes it can overlap with reputation.  It’s what employees, customers, partners, franchisees, etc. say behind your back. Vision is the broad, strategic focus of the organization.

When I have the opportunity to work with other organizations, I pay attention. I watch how people treat one another, the vision of the organization and the values that become clear. I have been impressed with ACW and see many similarities.  That's why I continue to stay engaged and always want to learn more.

My personal experience is with Great Clips, Inc. We have had the same vision for decades and leverages six key values. The vision is “Working together to build the most profitable salons by delivering the most powerful and enduring brand. Working together drives our relationships and our business.   Profitability fuels wages and benefits, creates growth, and strengthens communities.  The most powerful and enduring brand is the result of listening to customers and providing them a haircut experience that meets their needs and lifestyle.

And our values, describe the way we work together.  It describes our actions and our approach to our business. Our values evolve around the following : At Great Clips, strong relationships and responsiveness are at the heart of our individual and company success. The relationships we build with each other, and our franchisees are grounded in our core values.

Our 6 values
  • We are kind: Be humble, act honorably, and express gratitude.
  • We Listen and earn trust: Listen generously; seek to understand other’s perspectives.
  • We keep it simple: Make things easy to understand and execute.
  • We focus on execution: Make decisions with a belief that it can be executed in 6,000 salons.
  • We exceed expectations: Collaborate and work together to achieve goals.
  • We make it fun: Celebrate accomplishments and recognize the contributions of others.

The two that are most important are “We are kind’, and “We listen and earn trust’.  So very simple and so hard to do every day.

“We are kind” is an expectation.  There is a belief that every interaction counts, and that every opportunity to connect with a franchisee or a customer adds or detracts from the relationship.  Kindness doesn’t require any special training…it has an immediate impact…it is contagious…it doesn’t require technology or additional investments.  It often provides immediate positive feedback. Whether you are in a large meeting or visiting a Great Clips salon, you will likely feel kindness and caring. It is a differentiator and powerful.

“ We listen and earn trust” is an active statement.  It infers that you must keep “building”, and that you need to continually earn and strengthen trust.  Trust is easy to lose if you aren’t actively listening. Earning trust requires discipline and a commitment to one another. Trust requires the willingness to ask questions and use the feedback and input provided. Trust requires candid conversations, the willingness to admit mistakes, and acting with integrity, even when no one is watching.

These two values build the foundation of our culture and reputation. It’s amazing how franchisees, customers, and employees use these words when they describe our culture.  It is what they say about us behind our backs, and we are proud that they use the same words that are in our values.

Business is built on relationships, and GREAT relationships are the result of well-defined values and a commitment to live those values every day in the organization.

Life On The Spectrum Call for Art
Join ACW’s partnership with Grand Hand Gallery

Did you know that an estimated 1 in 100 children worldwide is born with autism? In order to reduce the stigma of neurodivergent individuals, we must work together to educate ourselves and one another on the condition.
Artists, who participate in this gallery exhibition are tasked with creating a piece of any medium they choose as long as it addresses the given prompt: How has autism changed your world? Both neurodivergent and neurotypical artists are encouraged to apply and draw on their personal experiences with autism. Let’s all come together to talk about what it really means to be on the spectrum.

Family-friendly events are one thing to want to censor art for young viewers, but what about the general public viewing art?
The most censored art has been about religion, politics, or nudity/sexual content.
With non-profits, they have to be careful what they put out there in the public as political and religious statements can hurt their organization.
One city in Minnesota wouldn't allow a replica of a DaVinci painting within an abstract painting to be shown because of the nudity involved. So a flower was painted over. What do you think? Comment on our Facebook page
