PRE-OSCAR NOTES, PART TWO

Campaigning Perhaps the biggest question about this year’s Oscar nominees involves how Andrea Riseborough earned a Best Lead Actress nomination for her work in To Leslie. That film has reportedly grossed around $30,000.00 (not a typo), which of course means that hardly anyone has seen it. The answer is that a small but powerful group of Hollywood insiders organized a campaign for Ms. Riseborough. I haven’t yet seen To Leslie and I’m sure that she gave a superb performance (which I look forward to watching). But many other actresses in many other films also gave great performances but didn’t have campaigners and so weren’t nominated. Campaigning is nothing new, but to keep the proverbial playing field as level as possible, the Oscars should add restrictions to it.

“The Best Popular Film” award In 2018 the Academy rejected this idea – very wise, even though it would have been in addition to, and not instead of, the Best Picture award. (Note that in 1929 the first Oscar ceremony did indeed have separate awards for Outstanding Picture as well as for Unique and Artistic Picture. But the following year they eliminated the latter.) I bring this up because so few big-budget, special-effects films have major nominations this year. Instead we have plenty of nominations for more script-oriented or cast-oriented films. Again, I think the Academy has been very wise.

The 95th Oscar presentations will air on live television on Sunday, March 12.
