GRESFORD SUSPENSION BRIDGE REPLACEMENT GETS THE GREEN LIGHT

Council will receive $9.7 Million to strengthen its low-level river crossings, including the long-awaited upgrade to Gresford Suspension Bridge.

This week the Mayor joined Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Sam Farraway, Upper Hunter MP Dave Layzell, Councillors, and senior members of Council staff on site to announce $3.7 Million for the special bridge replacement project.

Council will use the remaining funds to roll out its River and Floodway Crossing Improvement Program which includes upgrades to 26 river crossings, from the Upper Allyn through to Vacy, Paterson and Glen Martin to name a few, improving capacity of culverts at Hooke Street and replace the shire’s last remaining local road timber bridge.

The replacement of Gresford Suspension Bridge has been high on Council’s agenda for some time.  In fact, we have continued to advocate for critical roads and infrastructure funding to be able to deliver projects like these right across the shire, which are essential components to our way of life.

This latest funding, which comes jointly from the State and Federal Governments, allows us to provide upgrades to low-level causeways and smaller bridges that regularly over-top during rain events.

The current suspension bridge structure at Gresford will be replaced under this latest funding boom from the State and Federal government.

The 72.3m bridge connecting Gresford to an isolated community to the west of Paterson River will be replaced with a raised concrete structure that provides more stable access that is guaranteed during rain events.

While several previous grant applications for the project were unsuccessful due to the bridge’s unique steel and timber construction, Council has never wavered in its commitment to see this project come to fruition, with the Mayor personally advocating this to all levels of government so Council can deliver road and infrastructure upgrades to a standard our community deserves.

The latest funding comes from an overall $312.5 Million Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package that is designed to assist rural Councils to invest in prevention, preparedness and capability development initiatives to ensure they are ready for future natural disasters.

DUNGOG VAN PARK IS PROGRESSING

Council is looking forward to meeting with the successful tender recipients of Dungog Caravan Park - the Jeffress Group – this week for an update on this much-anticipated project.

Council is aware there has been lots of discussion and speculation as to the timeline of the park becoming operational. Understandably, the community is eager to see it to fruition.

The Jeffress Group has a strong track record of accomplishment in the tourism sector, with parks and motels in the Mid-North Coast.

ART MURAL PROJECT FOR GRESFORD

Work has begun on a series of murals across Gresford that once finished, will create a beautiful explosion of colour and vibrancy to the country town. The Gresford Public Art Project is a long-term beautification and artist installation delivered by Arts Upper Hunter that will see the development of many public works across the township over five years.

The project is still in its planning stages with a number of murals yet to be decided, but some are confirmed including the butcher shop wall, the newly constructed Gresford sporting facility (this one is of a photograph taken on a hot air balloon of all of Gresford) and a timeline of the town‘s history set for the Gresford Showground.

Watch this space, we will update you as these gorgeous murals get underway. Well done to the creatives behind the project. We can’t wait to see the finished project. It’s sure to make Gresford a stop of the creative Hunter touring map.

RESPECT FOR ONE AND ALL

It’s been a long hot summer and Council’s road crews have been working hard to deliver some vital infrastructure projects, helping to build a better, safer Dungog for all.

Unfortunately, there have been several reports of incidents of aggression and abuse towards Council workers who are working on key road sites across the shire.

We understand the state of our roads are a contentious issue for many in our community and we are doing everything we can to expedite through our massive program of works, however having such incidents can interfere with the delivery of these vital projects.

Council has a ZERO tolerance for aggression and abuse towards our staff and police will be notified if staff are threatened or abused for simply doing their jobs.

On the whole, we live in such a wonderful, connected, supportive bushland and farming community, let’s remember to respect the roads and the people working on them. We ALL want to get home safely and do our part to build a better Dungog Shire.

SADDLE UP FOR THE GRESFORD SHOW

As you may well know, the Gresford Show is back for the 91st time on 10 & 11 March.

This tradition, dating back to 1927, is Gresford’s opportunity to showcase all the agricultural skill across the town and the shire. They’ve got a range of different competitions, judging the best horses, cattle, and poultry. There will also be an impressive camp drafting and high-octane post splitting.

The Pavillion will be displaying and judging the shire’s best farm produce, homestyle cooking, and flower arrangements. And who could forget the pet parade, with a range of different prizes from best costume to longest tail!

Nominations are still open for many of these competitions, so if you haven’t nominated yet, time is ticking!

Follow along on their Facebook page or website for updates and more information as the weekend approaches.
