Lifetime Benefits

"Never let a day pass without doing something that will benefit you in a decade." -- James Clear

We make hundreds of choices every day. I'm teaching my Economics students about cost-benefit analysis right now. Each and every one of us is doing cost-benefit analyses all day long.

Do the benefits of sleeping in outweigh the costs of having less time to get ready? Do the benefits of this beer outweigh the costs of how it will make me feel later? Do the benefits of watching a show outweigh the costs of not working on an important project?

Most of our analyses focus on the here and now, and maybe on tomorrow and the rest of the week. But today, I challenge us to think long term.

It's hard to think that way when we're young. We don't know where the hell we'll be in 10 years when we're in our 20's and 30's. But once we get into our 40's, once we settle in with our family, we have a pretty good idea where we'll be and what we'll be doing in 10 years. And because we have an idea, we also have an obligation to give ourselves the best chance at health and happiness in the future.

So today I challenge each of us to do at least one thing that will benefit us in a decade. I'll be 56 in 2033. A nice workout will do the trick. So will some quality time with my wife, son, and daughter. And 56-year old me can look back on March 3, 2023 and say, "Thanks for taking care of me."

Make it a great day!
