Suicide Prevention Update

The Perth Metropolitan Suicide Prevention Coordinators assist in the delivery of the Mental Health Commissions’ Suicide Prevention 2025 Framework. Our role is to build community capacity to prevent and respond to suicide through awareness, education & training, partnerships and events. We work with community groups, organisations and interagency networks to build safety and support.

The Perth Metropolitan Suicide Prevention Coordinators do not provide a crisis services or interventions for consumers.

What's been happening

RightByYou Launch

Around 150 people from stakeholders, youth mental health advocates and youth groups attended the launch of the RightByYou website at Youth Week Event April 18th. Keynote speakers, Acting Mental Health Commissioner Lindsay Hale, Commissioner for Children and Young People Jacqueline McGowan-Jones and the CEO of Youth Affairs Council of WA Sandy McKiernan shared their gratitude to the website.

RightByYou is our new website designed by young people, to inform and empower other young Australians to reach out and support a friend showing thoughts of suicide.

You can now access the website at rightbyyou.org.au. Feel free to access the “Community Campaign Toolkit” in the About section if you’re interested in sharing the message.
Triple J and the West Australian
 
SPC Neeka spoke about the new rightbyyou.org.au website with the West Australian and on the Triple J’s Hack program on April 19th.

SPC South Update

Introducing the newest SPC Team Member!
Hi, I’m Amy. New SPC for the South Metro Region covering Agnes maternity leave. I studied Nursing at university and have been with Neami for 3 years. Before working as a SPC, I was with the Neami psychosocial outreach team and a NDIS Support Coordinator.
 
 
Walliabup Wellness Day 
SPC and Neami’s Community Engagement Officer held a stall at Walliabup Wellness Day Community Expo sharing mental health resources to parents, carers and primary school aged children.
 
Wellbeing in Schools
SPC with Imagined Futures has continue to sponsor mental health workshops in schools. So far this year over 150 principals, teachers and parents have participated in the training.
SPC East Update

Afghan Young Leaders International Woman’s Day Event
Attended and provided a range of culturally responsive and translated resources. 
Maria the organiser of the event wrote:
“I am writing to express my sincerest gratitude for your presence and contributions to our Women's Day event for the Afghan women and community … Your mental health flyers and support pathways in the Dari language were extremely helpful and informative. Your contributions have helped us raise awareness of mental health issues and support pathways for the Afghan refugee community, which is especially important in these challenging times.”
 

East Metro Junior Football Presentation
SPC presented to 40 junior football clubs from the East Metro region. The presentation focused on resources for clubs and how to support both players and families who maybe facing mental health challenges
SPC North Update

Youth At Risk Network (YARN) Youth Week event
On the 18th April SPC supported YARN to run a youth week event at YMCA HQ which had live music, market stalls and food. The event focused on mental health awareness and support services for youth at risk of homelessness.
 
Warwick Bowling Club 
Over the March long weekend SPC supported a Men's mental health training session for 40 participants to do training with Rural Men's Health then ran a tournament promoting Think Mental Health. The Country week tournament attended by 90 bowlers also featured Think Mental Health Messaging.
 
12 Buckets 
During the April School Holidays SPC supported a community activity supporting year 7 students who had transitioned into high school. The activity included mental health talks as well as a trip to the city.
 
Rainbow Futures 
SPC supported a community forum hosted by Living Proud and Rainbow Futures to discuss LGBTIQA+ issues and gaps in supports. The forum was well attended and lots of fruitful discussion.

Upcoming

  • South SPC have sponsored Bindjareb Youth First Aid training in the Pinjarra and Mandurah region in mid-May. This training is being run by Kickett Consulting.
  • SPC are planning a ‘Wellness in Workplace forum’ for mid-June, as researching is showing that compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma appears in higher rates within healthcare, emergency and community service workers. This forum will explore workplace wellness and reducing compassion fatigue through providing resources and access to workplace mental health support. Please keep an eye out for more details.
  • East Metro in collaboration with Derbal Yerrigan and headspace Cannington have arranged horse riding for high school Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students on May 6th.
