Headlines

Register to attend the Sixth Annual International Women's Day Symposium: Breaking Through Barriers in STEM on Friday, March 10 from 1:30–7:00 PM at the Simpson Querrey Research Center. Several programs and departments within Northwestern are involved in hosting the symposium. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is offering free registration to the first 30 people who register using the promo code CHISTEM_TGS

The symposium will host a variety of speakers who will share their stories and provide valuable information about resilience, empowerment, and breaking through both visible and invisible barriers in STEM. Learn more and register here.
The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the Ver Steeg and McBride AwardsAward recipients will be recognized with a certificate of recognition and a $1,000 monetary award.
  • The Ver Steeg Awards recognize one outstanding non-faculty staff member and one graduate faculty member for excellence in working with TGS students. Please complete the faculty and staff nomination forms to nominate an outstanding graduate faculty and staff member.
     
  • The McBride Awards recognize one TGS student and one postdoctoral trainee who go above and beyond in any or all of the areas of diversity, service, and engagement. Please complete this form to nominate an outstanding TGS student and/or a postdoctoral trainee.
The nomination period for these awards is open until Monday, March 6 at 5:00 PM CST. All members of the graduate community at Northwestern are welcome to nominate individuals for each award.

Mentoring Up + Down Workshop Series


The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs runs quarterly “Mentoring Up + Down” workshops for postdoctoral trainees in all disciplines who would like to learn best practices to help them establish effective and productive mentoring relationships with their mentees (“mentoring down”) and their mentors (“mentoring up”). Register for Winter Quarter workshops below:
Join Beyond the Professoriate every Wednesday in March from 11:00–11:30 AM CST for a free month-long webinar series to help you decide between an academic or nonacademic career. Each week's session will analyze questions and topics related to job searching and engage participants in interactive activities to find the right career. Learn more and register here.

Enroll in the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project Course


Enroll in the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project, a free six-week online course from Monday, March 6 – Friday, April 28. This course is designed to advance the awareness, self-efficacy, and ability to cultivate inclusive STEM learning environments and develop reflective, inclusive practitioners. Learn more and register here.

Participants of this course should also register for the Northwestern Learning Community to build a dialogue with other faculty, doctoral students, and postdoctoral trainees enrolled in the course.
Attend a hybrid open house for the Pritzker School of Law's Master of Science in Law (MSL) degree on Saturday, March 4 from 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM CST. In-person and virtual attendance options are available. Learn more and register here.

The MSL degree is an innovative law degree offered by Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. The MSL is designed for individuals with STEM backgrounds who are interested in cross-disciplinary work at the intersection of law, regulation, business, and policy. As a postdoctoral scholar at Northwestern, you may be able to use the Reduced Tuition Benefit to cover most of the cost of tuition.

Attend an Understanding the Media: A Starter Guide online media training course on Wednesday, March 15 from 1:00–2:00 PM CST, offered by SciLine. This free, one-hour coursedesigned specifically for media-curious scientists with little or no media experienceteaches the basics that scientists need to know as they consider dipping their toes or diving deeper into media engagement. NIH Public Postdoc Research Listening Sessions


The National Institutes of Health (NIH) welcomes community input on the status of the postdoctoral training system in four upcoming public virtual listening sessions held between Wednesday, March 8 – Monday, March 20. Each session is led by a new Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) Working Group to explore and address critical themes of postdoc research. Register for any or all sessions here.

The Graduate School (TGS) Office of Diversity and Inclusion invites the TGS community to attend a Let's Talk Diversity dialogue series event, Intersectional Approaches to Designing Syllabi, on Thursday, March 16 from 12:00–1:00 PM CST via Zoom.

Facilitated by Romeo E. Jacksonthis workshop articulates how educators can mobilize intersectional approaches in their teaching practices and reflect on how students may be engaged in the classroom environment. Learn more and register here by Wednesday, March 15.

Register for a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) virtual training on Tuesday, March 21 from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM in the Ray Conley Lounge, Wieboldt Hall Room 540. MHFA is an evidence-based training designed to identify, destigmatize, understand, and respond to the signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. NUPA News
  • The Northwestern University Postdoctoral Association (NUPA) Book Club meets on the third Monday of each month to discuss the Book Club Read for that month. Meet with NUPA on Monday, March 20 from 9:00–10:00 PM CST via Zoom to discuss March's selection, Exhalation by Ted Chiang. Learn more and register here.
