Staff Picks

Marietta's Pick

Allie and Bea by Catherine Ryan Hyde

"An adventure between two unlikely people, an older woman in her seventies and a fifteen year old girl. Both are in desperate situations. Bea, basically broke, living and traveling on her own, in her only possession, her van, and Allie on the run from the group home and unsavory characters she encountered after her parents went to jail. Although at odds at first, with Bea’s somewhat crabby disposition and Allie’s naïve but enthusiastic nature, the two continue their undertaking of travel in the West Coast. As the two travel on, an unexpected bond between the two develops.

I listened to the audio and highly recommend the book as well as the audio."
Steph's Pick

Simon Sort of Says by Erin Bow

"After a tragedy skyrockets Simon into viral fame his family seeks refuge in Grin and Bear It, Nebraska. This a town where the internet and cell phones are banned so scientists can scan outer space for alien radio signals. As Simon settles in, he makes new friends, trains a puppy and becomes involved with a prank all of which helps him rebuild his life

This tween read is a touching look at recovery after a trauma. Well drawn characters, a unique setting, thoughtful writing, and a touching storyline make this a heartfelt read that will stick with you long after finishing."
