Dear friends and partners,
Rain or shine, LAUSD is hard at work making progress for our school communities! Yesterday, I joined students, parents, and staff at Stanley Mosk Elementary to announce a $100,000 grant for a campus greening project. This is one of several investments totaling nearly $2 million that my office is awarding to provide campus gardens, green spaces, trees, and more for our school communities most in need of green space.
Last week we also celebrated the completion of Venice High’s $162 million campus modernization! I was thrilled to cut the ribbon on new state-of-the-art classrooms, athletic facilities, outdoor spaces, and more to create a modern learning environment on this iconic campus. With over 100 of our schools now over 100 years old, the work continues on the herculean task of modernizing all of our learning environments to support all students.
Finally, this week we celebrated Read Across America, celebrating the work our schools do to instill a joy of reading and make sure all students learn to read and so they can read to learn and thrive in the world.
Onward,

Along with celebrating Venice High's new campus and Stanley Mosk ES's new greening grant, I was excited to visit classrooms at ICEF MS and Whitman HS, check out the progress on CWC Mar Vista's new campus, congratulate the winning AcaDeca SOCES team, meet with families and community members from the DragonSprouts and Playa Venice Rotary Club, and thank everyone involved for their support and advocacy of the upcoming youth sports facilities project in Westchester.

In the Spotlight: A New Leader for LAUSD's New Region West
|
|
|
We are thrilled to have Dr. Denise Collier at the helm of LAUSD's Region West as the new Region West Superintendent! Dr. Collier's educational career started in her hometown of Oakland as an instructional aide, and she has been with the District for nearly 30 years as a teacher, coordinator, principal, and Community of Schools Administrator (COSA). She is also a proud LAUSD parent, with the youngest of her three sons in middle school. She stayed close to home to get her college and graduate degrees at UC Berkeley, where she also met her husband. She loves cooking, jazz, and a good mystery. We are excited to welcome Dr. Collier to Region West!
