Flight for Sight Balloon Festival
PCC Jack Romano will be coordinating volunteers
Each of the three New Jersey Lions districts will be expected to provide approximately 50 volunteers to help run the Balloon Festival Fundraiser at the Flying W in Medford, June 16-18, 2023. Volunteers will be needed Friday evening, and on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a need for all types of helpers - from selling admissions and manning information booths about Lions Global Causes - to supervising the children's play area, to collecting trash. We are hoping to have jobs divvied up into two hour shifts - so Lions can also have an opportunity to enjoy the festival. Tee shirts will be provided for volunteers so that patrons can readily identify them
PCC Jack Romano (District 16N) has graciously agreed to take on the scheduling task. Watch this space for additional information and links to the online volunteer sign-ups. In the meantime, put this event on your calendar if you are interested in helping out. Proceeds from the event will help the Multiple District 16 Lions with expenses expected when New Jersey hosts the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum for thousands of Lions and Leos, in Atlantic City in September 2025. Visit https://njlions.org/flightforsight/ for additional information about the Balloon Festival. Lions interested in signing up to take a balloon ride, should contact CC Bob Friedel or 1stVDG Donna Friedel. ($20 for a tethered ride, and $300 for a trip.) Schedule your ride now, so you will know when you are free to volunteer.
The Albert J Carino Basketball Club of South Jersey
Volunteers for the All-Star Basketball Game
The Albert J Carino Basketball Club (AJCBBC) is an organization that recognizes high school basketball players, coaches and contributors in South Jersey. (Does not include Monmouth and Ocean Counties who belong to a different conference). As supporting youth has long been a cause championed by Lions, clubs from South Jersey have been working with AJCBBC since the 1970’s. Each year they co-sponsor All-Star games, to raise money for scholarships. The game will be played this year on March 26, 2023, at the Rutgers University Camden Campus.
If you would like to volunteer to staff ticket booths and sell programs on game day, contact the 16L Chairpersons, PDG Bob DeLambily at 856.278.1212 or PDG Bill Sauser at 856.629.1956. Reminder: If your club wishes to pay for the game tickets mailed to it, make the check payable to the Al Carino Basketball Club of SJ and mail it to PDG Bob DeLambily.
USABA NE Regional Goalball Tournament returns to South Jersey
Great opportunity for Leo Clubs to serve
The Association for Blind Athletes of New Jersey (ABANJ) will be hosting over 100 athletes from all over the country for the 2023 Gunderman Goalball Classic. Volunteers are needed to assist ABANJ and the Westmont Lions Club with the Goalball tournament to be held at Haddon Township Hight School all day Saturday, April 15, 2023 and in the morning on Sunday, April 16th.
Goalball is the most popular team sport for the blind and visually impaired. The sport originated in 1946 when Austrian Hanz Lorrenzen and German Sett Reindle developed the game as a way to keep blinded WWII veterans physically active. Goalball has since become the premier team sport for blind athletes and is played competitively in 112 countries.
Volunteers are needed for time keeping, line judging, scoring, escorts and driving. No experience or knowledge of the game is needed, you will be trained. All volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers, and line judges should be able to swiftly retrieve game balls that go out of bounds during play. School & Community service hours will be signed off if needed.
You can volunteer your time for the day, or even a few hours. Your service will help this tournament run smoothly for these athletes. It takes 9 volunteers per court to run a game, and several games will be going on simultaneously in the early tournament rounds. They are also looking for a volunteer who has access to a van and can help transport the athletes to and from the Philadelphia airport to the gyms and hotels
To volunteer please contact Westmont Lions club members Kimberley Schemeley at 856.495.9727 or kimberleyschemeley@gmail.com, or Bonnie Richards at 856.577.8630 or bmrrich@msn.com. Lions Bonnie and Kim would be happy to coordinate with Leo Club Advisors to schedule times for Leos to help out.

KidSight USA - Training and Screenings:
Moorestown, Williamstown, Turnersville Washington Township, Maple Shade and Bridgeton Lions Clubs
Two trainings on the use of the vision screener were held this winter, and clubs are starting to put what they have learned to good use throughout South Jersey. In December, Lois Kelly, of the Berlin Lions trained Lion volunteers Ellen Gagnon, Marleen O'Donnell, Carol Ellis, and Jane Thorndike from the Moorestown Lions Club and Peg Snyder of the Maple Shade Lions Club. In January, Lion Lois traveled to the Monroe Township Public Library to train Lions Nancy Cintrino, Cathy Trimble, Richard Cintrino, and Ryan Cintrino from the Turnersville-Washington Twp Lions Club, and Fran Mulherin of the Williamstown Lions Club. In the photo Lion Ryan is practicing aiming the screener at Lion Fran. The KidSight program only screens children, but we all know that Lion Fran is a kid at heart, and made the perfect target.
Several Bridgeton Lions Club members took what they learned in a previous training in the fall, and screened children from pre-K to grade 4 at the Maurice River Township Elementary School. Lions Harvey McCubbin, John Cararow, John Simmons, and Michael Cudemo were able to screen 205 children in under four hours. The Lions found 10 children who didn't pass the screening. The school nurse Leslie Daigle, RN notified the families so they could get follow up. She assisted the Lions in organizing the flow of students getting screened.
Haddonfield Lions Club - Blood Drive
The Haddonfield Lions Club and the American Legion Post 38 joined forces to organize a successful American Red Cross Blood Drive at Grace Church Parish Hall in Haddonfield on February 25, 2023.

Avalon Lions Club - DAV Post 44 Donation
Disabled American Veterans Post 44 is raising money to build an outdoor pavilion at their Del Haven headquarters in time for warmer weather. With nearly six hundred members, the organization is busy year round helping, transporting and entertaining veterans from throughout Cape May County. The planned pavilion will host meetings, barbecues and get-togethers outside to complement the post’s popular interior. After a one day collection, held at Canal’s Discount Liquors in Rio Grande last Thanksgiving weekend, the Avalon Lions raised fifteen hundred dollars to help the post reach their goal.

West Berlin Lions Club - Where there's a need, there's a Lion!
In February, the West Berlin Lions helped out at a local food bank distributing food, and also helped out a West Berlin Family with obtaining necessities. The club also donated underwear to the JFK Elementary school nurse, for those days when a child might need it.
West Berlin Lions Club President, Heather Roark, delivers a very useful donation to Lisa Gillespie, the school nurse at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in West Berlin.
