St. Mark's E-News

March 3, 2023
During Lent we journey with all those around the world who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. In today’s gospel Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born of water and Spirit. At the font we are a given a new birth as children of God. As God made a covenant with Abraham, in baptism God promises to raise us up with Christ to new life. From worship we are sent forth to proclaim God’s love for all the world. (from Sunday and Seasons).

Cambridge Coffee House Returns
Cambridge Coffee House made a triumphant return last Saturday night after an almost three-year pandemic induced hiatus. Approximately 70 people attended and were treated to an evening of fabulous live music. Just over $900 was raised for The Urban.

Many thanks to:
  • those who attended and made a donation towards the cause
  • the musicians, especially St. Mark's very own House Blend and Contata Colombia
  • those who helped with the set up and the tear down (that is, putting the pews back in the sanctuary)
  • those who provided baking and the hospitality crew in the kitchen for brewing coffee and tea and serving the baked goods.
  • Melissa for coordinating the whole affair
Click HERE to watch a short video compilation of the evening's program.  Thanks to Chris H for providing the video.

Ukraine Crisis Response by CLWR
February 24, 2023, marked one year since the invasion of Ukraine. CLWR's partners continue to deliver life-saving aid to families who have lost everything. Your support has provided incredible hope and help — thank you for your compassion.

As of February 2023, over 8 million refugees have fled Ukraine and over 6 million are internally displaced. Most refugees from Ukraine have fled to neighbouring countries, while some have sought safety elsewhere in Europe. As a high proportion of these refugees are women and children, protection activities alongside humanitarian assistance, have become vital. Inside Ukraine, homes and critical infrastructure have been damaged and destroyed. Outages of electricity, heating and water have been seen in many areas, while other services such as health care, public transport and internet connectivity have also been disrupted. As a result, many people find themselves without accommodation and unable tomeet their basic needs, including for food, water, and medicine.

CLWR partners in the ACT Alliance continue to respond in Ukraine and the region to meet humanitarian needs such as food, shelter, emergency supplies and trauma support and winterization support as well as protection activities and supporting local organizations to provide vital services.

Soup & Bread for Lent

For Lent this year, we are renewing the traditional serving of Soup & Bread at 6:15PM followed by Holden Evening Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Mark you calendar for the five Wednesdays in Lent.
Hosting this coming week (March 8) is the Sunday School and Youth Group.

Offerings given at the Wednesday evening services will go to Lutheran Urban Ministry.  You can learn more about LUM by clicking here.

We are very excited for this opportunity of fellowship and Lenten practice. We look forward to gathering in this way and seeing (and tasting) all the various bowls of Soup prepared by the people of this faith community.

Conversations with Martin Luther’s Small Catechism

For many Lutherans, Luther’s Small Catechism is the foundation to understanding our faith and why we say what we believe we say we do.  For most, however, the Small Catechism is a distant memory of Confirmation classes years gone.  Some, like Pastor Zsófi, became Lutheran as adults and didn’t have that experience at all.  This study is for those of you:
  • who want to re/visit the Small Catechism;
  • who would like to understand the theology and history behind the words Luther wrote;
  • who want to re/discover what exactly we say we believe and why;
  • who would like to have some open and inclusive conversations about God, Faith & the Gospel.
The study is being offered in Lent on Friday evenings from 7:00pm – 8:30pm.  The schedule is as follows:
  • March 10th – Ch. 3 “The Apostle’s Creed”
  • March 17th – Ch. 4 “The Lord’s Prayer”
  • April 14th – Ch. 5 “The Sacrament of Holy Baptism and Confession”
  • April 21st – Ch. 6 “The Sacrament of the Altar”
  • April 28th – Ch. 7 “Daily Prayer and the Household Chart”

You are welcome to attend the sessions that interest you or the entire program.
The course book is available to purchase at $20 each, or can be borrowed for reading. Books are now ready to be picked up from Pastor Zsófi.
Eternity for Today - New Edition has Arrived.

East Side Entrance to Church closed
Due to ice damming and extremely slippery steps, we have closed off the entrance on the east side of the building.  For the near future, please use the main entrance of the door at the south end of the parish hall.

Investigations are underway to assess the damage caused by the ice build-up and to find a solution to prevent a recurrence of this problem.
